Cleaning out your closet is now easier than ever!

One day back in 2009, James Reinhart looked into his closet and suddenly realized that it was full of clothing that he never even wore. This got him thinking: are there lots of other closets in the world just like mine? And how could those clothes be better put to use? "I knew there was value locked up in those clothes, and I knew I wasn't the only one," he recalls.

Reinhart used this newfound insight to start thredUP, an online consignment store that makes it easy for customers to clean out their closets and sell their secondhand clothing to others. Their mission is about "shopping with intention, rejecting throwaway fashion culture, and standing for sustainability." Because more than 73% of apparel ends up discarded in landfills or incinerated, they believe in creating less waste by breathing new life into "old" clothing, and to help to reduce overall CO2 emissions in the process.

So far, thredUP has processed over 137 million pieces of clothing. (Items that cannot be sold are either reused or responsibly recycled rather than thrown away.) As a result, over 637 million lbs. of CO2 emissions have been avoided, and it has netted customers an estimated $4.1 billion in savings. Talk about a win-win!

Because of our shared interest in both sustainability and transforming closets, we at The Container Store felt thredUP would make an ideal partner. And now, by visiting our partnership site, you can either activate an existing thredUP Clean Out Kit or print a free shipping label. Then, once you've packed up and shipped your gently used women's and children's clothing and shoes, you can earn an eGift Card from us that can be used on all kinds of great organization items!
