Paperwork can be the bane of many an existence, but it doesn't have to lead to a cluttered workspace. Whether you're a pile-loving enthusiast or a label-wielding filing fanatic, The Container Store has home organization solutions to help tame paper clutter that can be life-changing (or at least attitude-changing!).
First, decide which type you are—a "filer" or a "piler"...
The Filer:
Filers love order. If you're a filer, your office space is full of files that are categorized, color-coded, and labeled. For folks like you, we have a terrific assortment of sturdy, lockable filing cabinets designed to keep your paperwork organized.
Prefer something portable? We also have an assortment of file boxes perfect for keeping your papers tidy while on the go.
Either way, you can pair these storage solutions with tabbed or hanging file folders. Label them according to type: tax documents, medical, insurance policies, etc.
The Piler:
Pilers are not quite as orderly. But just because you prefer piles of papers doesn't mean those piles can't be organized. For you, we recommend stackable paper trays that can still help you keep better track of every piece of paper on our desk.
How to Organize Mail:
Paper organization doesn't stop at documents. Instead of letting mail pile up indefinitely, designate a mail-sorting area equipped with stacking trays or baskets for "To Pay," "To Review/Act On," "To File," "School Papers," and even individual family inboxes. Label everything clearly, and remember, even junk mail can reveal personal details—use a black marker or roller to keep identities safe.
How to Organize Paperwork and Files:
If you can go entirely paperless, at least make sure you have less paper to deal with. Start by sorting and decluttering: recycle what you can, keep important papers (birth certificates, social security cards, warranties, etc.) stored safely and separately, and create a filing system for the rest that works with your habits.
If you need to store important paperwork long-term but don't need easy access to it every day, you can use an alternative storage space, such as a safety deposit box or storage unit. Sentimental items such as photo albums, artwork, and old ticket stubs can be stored there as well.
Bonus Organizing Tips:
With these tips and The Container Store's vast selection of storage solutions, you can become clutter-free and reclaim your space! So grab your label maker and let the organizing begin!
