Audiophiles rejoice--vinyl records are back! (Although they never really went away to begin with.) Here are a few tips and suggestions for keeping your prized platters protected and sounding great.
Your vinyl records will play better when they're not coated in dust, so be sure to invest in a good recording cleaning brush and clean them frequently before putting them back into their sleeves.
It's generally preferable to store vinyl records standing up and in their album jackets. Stacking records for long periods of time is not recommended, as it can lead to warping.
If possible, try to store your vinyl records in a climate-controlled environment. (Temperatures between 40 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit are best.) Excessive heat and humidity can cause warping, and records exposed to freezing temperatures can become brittle. Also, try to avoid direct sunlight to prevent those beautiful album covers from fading over time.
How you store your vinyl records should depend on how they're used. For example, if you're a DJ who lugs around multiple LPs from gig to gig, an easily portable solution (such as our Really Useful Vinyl Storage Box) is optimal.
In other instances, you may prefer to store your LPs in a decorative bin, especially if you keep them out in the open or on a shelf. A large, sturdy bin (such as the Harvest Wire Storage Basket) that makes your vinyl easy to flip through can also double as an attractive accent piece.
An archival box is one of the best ways to keep old or rare records protected. It features reinforced metal corners that prevent crushing, as well as an acid- and lignin-free construction designed to preserve the box's contents for years to come.
Take advantage of any vertical space by storing your records on sturdy shelves. (Vinyl records can get HEAVY, so InterMetro or Metro Commercial shelves would be a good option for them.)
If you're short on space and need to stash your records out of sight, try a bench or seat that also doubles as a storage box.
