How to Open a Locker
Lockers can be frustrating to open. Here are some helpful tips on how to open a combination lock on a locker.
Remember that the way to open a locker is the opposite of the way you look to safely cross the street: right-left-right. To unlock a locker, you will turn the lock clockwise - then counterclockwise - then clockwise again. For this example, we will use the combination 34 - 7- 48.
To open a locker:
- Have the three-number combination handy on your phone, or on a piece of paper.
- Place your hand on the lock and make three full turns to the right. Pass 0 three times to reset the lock and clear the memory.
- Turn the lock to the right until the triangle at the top of the lock lines up with the number 34.
- Now turn the lock to the left. Pass by the second number (7) until you get to the number 7 a second time. (This is important!) The triangle should be lined up with the 7.
- Turn the lock to the right until you reach the third number (48). Don't pass the third number. The triangle should be aligned with number 48.
- Pull down on the lock. Some lockers have handles, in which case, pull up on the locker handle. You should have an open locker!
If these instructions did not open the locker, try these tips:
- After following the steps above, continue turning the lock further to the right until you hear a click. Some locks need to pass the final number slightly to open.
- Take a deep breath. Often when moving too quickly, it's easy to miss alignment with the correct number on the lock.
- Try clearing the memory by turning the dial to the right three times. Slowly try again.
- The locker may be jammed due to an object like a book or a jacket that fell on top of the locking mechanism. Try giving the locker a push or shake to dislodge the item blocking the lock.
- Try the combination again while pressing your shoulder or knee into the locker. Press firmly on the left side of the locker ¾ of the way up the door. Release tension after dialing the final number to open.
- Once you get the locker open, organize your books by stacking them vertically. Leverage the locker's metal sides by using magnetic organizers to get your items away from the lock to avoid a jam again.
- Ask for help. Often a teacher, janitor, or administrator or associate nearby can assist you with the lock.
Most lockers become stuck because items have fallen on the locking mechanism inside. Maintaining an organized locker will help you find items quickly and easily, and avoid further jams. With these tips in mind plus a little practice, opening a locker will be a breeze in no time.
