Before the Move
Make sure you get all of your dorm information from your school. Often they will send out a checklist and let you know of your dorm's sizing as well as exactly where you will be within the dorm. See if your school is listed in our college-specific guidelines here. If you live close enough, it's always a good idea to do a walk-through if possible - this allows you to really get a feel for the space you're working with!
If possible, gather the measurements of the closet you're going to have. Then set-up a rolling rack and measure it to that exact space in the dorm closet (the school website will often provide the dimensions). Over the weeks leading up to moving, you can add clothing to the rack that you know you'll need to take. Then, when you move in, you'll know that you have exactly the right amount of hanging clothes. Plus, it gives you time to think about what you want to bring!
You've packed the car, traveled to school and now it's time to unload - but the problem is everyone else wants to unload too. How do you make it easier on yourself and your move?
Our Folding Dolly might just be your best purchase. It takes up very little room in a car and makes move-in so much easier. Schools will most likely provide moving bins, but they will be in high demand. Needless to say, very few people will be able to use them during their move-in and will be forced to take one box at a time.
If you think you need 5 Command Hooks, strips, towels or anything to help set up and clean, buy 10. When move-ins happen it's best to be overly prepared so you don't have to pause the process to go get a single item at the store. Things can be taken back home or returned.
Make sure you actually unpack everything you want unpacked. Chances are, you'll be so tired once you move in that unpacked bags and boxes will sit exactly where they are for months and months. If you're like many of us and don't absolutely LOVE the idea of packing, transporting and unpacking - think about using solutions that do double-duty like our Poppin Box Seats and Benches. They sit and store so you can move in and plop down! Most of all though, don't forget to ENJOY the experience!
