Not everyone has a huge closet space and not all clothes should be hung up, so dresser organization is very important. A well-organized dresser drawer not only helps prevent unnecessary creasing and wrinkles in your clothes, but also allows you to save space and keep items from getting lost or misplaced.
Because folding clothes may not come naturally to everyone, here is The Container Store's step-by-step guide to clothes folding that will help you keep your dresser drawers neat and tidy!
Getting Started
First, it's time to declutter! Empty your drawers and go through everything. Once you've decided what to keep, fold everything using a "vertical" or "file folding" method (AKA Marie Kondo's Konmari Method). It works for all types of clothing— sweaters, socks, jeans, long sleeve shirts, t-shirts, underwear, tank tops, sports bras, pants, and more. This folding method lets you see all your choices at a glance and eliminates the need to dig through piles. The result are drawers that stay neat. Once you have your clothing folded into uniform rectangles, simply place them into your drawers. Use drawer dividers or drawer organizers to keep items separated.
Step 1
Lay your shirt out on a flat surface. Fold one side of the shirt to the center. Fold back the sleeves as needed to create a straight line down the middle.
Step 2
Fold the other side of the shirt to the center. Your shirt should now be a neat rectangle. If you are working with long sleeves, fold them down the rectangle and back up to be contained within the rectangle.
Step 3
Fold the rectangle almost in half, stopping just short of the bottom.
Step 4
Now fold the rectangle again in either half or in thirds, depending on how long the shirt is.
Step 5
Stand the folded shirt upright and place it in a drawer organizer. Arrange the drawer organizers in your drawers.
(Quick Tip: Use multiple drawer organizers in large drawers to create separate spaces for different types of clothing.)
