For many students, moving into a college dorm or first apartment is like riding a rollercoaster--exciting, but also a little scary. It often means adjusting to life in a much smaller space, as well as learning how to live with a roommate for the first time. (And a complete stranger at that!)

We understand that trepidation, so we've compiled a list of seven tips and suggestions to help you thrive in your new home away from home...

1. Pack only the essentials

When preparing to move into a dorm or apartment, there's no need to bring everything you own--particularly if you're going back home for the holidays. If possible, pack only seasonally-appropriate clothing and then swap out your wardrobe when you visit home for Thanksgiving or holiday break.

2. Utilize the space under your bed

Bed risers are your friend. Use them to raise up your bed a few inches--providing you with valuable storage real estate for drawers or bins stocked with bedding, clothes, shoes, or other accessories.

3. Keep large reusable bags handy

Reusable totes aren't just great for move-in day. You can also use them to haul laundry, shop for groceries, carry books, transport sports equipment--the list goes on. We recommend keeping a few of them around--perhaps even one with wheels--for such occasions.

4. Maximize closet space with rod expanders and slim hangers

Most dorm or apartment closets are simple: fairly small, not particularly deep, with maybe a single shelf and closet rod and that's it. But by adding an Umbra Dublet Adjustable Closet Rod Expander, you can instantly double your closet rod space. Then you can use slim-yet-sturdy space-saving hangers to make sure your garments take up less overall width. Those two simple solutions can help you maximize the space in any closet.

5. Ensure your tushy is cushy

Don't skimp on comfortable seating. For general seating--such as having a friend over or putting on your shoes--add a small Poppin Box Seat or Bench that can be moved around as-needed. (Plus, it doubles as storage!) For study and/or gaming sessions, choose an ergonomic desk chair that won't hurt your butt when seated for long periods of time.

6. Vertically integrate your desk

Another place in which you should maximize storage space is your desk. Simply add a folding hutch atop your desk for extra shelving space in which to keep office supplies, tech gear, study snacks, dorm décor, or whatever else you may need.

7. Do more with your door

Dorm door storage options include Elfa Door Racks, overdoor hampers, and overdoor mirrors

Another valuable potential storage space is the back of your door. Make the most of it by adding an Elfa Door & Wall Rack to hang shoes, bags, or other accessories. It's also a convenient space for an over-the-door hamper or mirror.
