Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surround yourself with the books you love! Amazing free standing white metal book shelf that looks fantastic in my bedroom or any room in the house. Ordered one for my daughter and liked it so much ordered one for myself too! Holds close to 50 books in very small space, very sturdy, minimalistic style, quality product. Was a little challenged getting one of the two metal screws to thread into the metal base, but eventually did get it secured properly. Maybe let the manufacture know of this challenge and it can be remedied for a better quick assembly, since it should be so easy with just two screws, right! HIGHLY recommend this bookshelf you definitely will not be disappointed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from floating bookshelf Beautiful design for a small space and very modern looking. I placed it against a wall in a narrow hall and filled it with a mix of paperbacks and hard covers. I then noticed it leaned forward about an inch. It was still stable but I did not care for the space at the top from the side being a little further from the wall. It was assembled properly. I exchanged it for the solid wood stackable bookcase and am much happier with it. I am even going to buy another one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sleek and compact bookshelf I recently went back to school and suddenly acquired a lot of books. I was looking for a compact bookshelf that would easily hold many books, and this bookshelf fit the bill. I absolutely love this shelf! I have two, and am about to buy a third. If you are looking for a sleek shelf that doesn’t take up much space, this shelf is for you. Super easy to put together (and take apart when needed).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfert Solution This bookcase was the perfect solution to our problem. My wife's bedroom end table had become a hopeless mountain of books. This bookcase fits neatly into the small corner right beside the end table, so it is both efficient and convenient. We love the way the bookcase itself becomes practically invisible once books are placed on it. Like a levitating stack of books.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good design, but defective shelf upon delivery Sleek design and very easy assembly, but one of the shelves was welded incorrectly and does not fit flush to the spine. Expected better quality control. Will have to repack, take to the store, and order a new one. Inconvenient. Love the design and small footprint. The anthracite color and material are neutral and look elegant.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cleverly Designed Bookshelf This is the best design for my space. It makes finding a book super easy. I still like paper books vs e readers. This bookshelf is easy to put together. The bottom shelf supports large paperback books. Highly recommend!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Kid Friendly My husband and I spotted this bookshelf at our local store. We loved it, and added it to our purchase. Unfortunately, we took it home and put it together, and felt that it wasn't stable or heavy enough to withstand the tugging, climbing, and pulling that our toddlers would inevitably do to it. We weighed it down with all of our books, and it just wasn't making a difference. Another downside is that it is even more wobbly on carpeted surfaces. This would be a great bookshelf for anyone without small children. Very modern and sleek design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to assemble - Good quality and space saving I really am happy with my purchase of this bookshelf. It didn't take very long to assemble and was packaged well. This product comes in two packages - one with the base and one with the shelves/spine. This bookshelf has a small footprint, does a great job of utilizing vertical space and fits quite a lot of books. I definitely won't hesitate to order another when I fill this one up. The anthracite color is a dark grey - almost black but not quite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very functional and love the modern design Sleek, unobtrusive design. Utilizes vertical space so is wonderful to place in a living room corner or by your bedside to house your books. Looks more beautiful full of books. You will not regret this purchase. Extremely easy to assemble.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought one for myself and one for my daughter This is the best bookcase for a small area. It holds more than you think it can hold. Perfect for a bedroom where stacks of books and magazines pile up on the nite stand. Because the shelves sort of disappear (they are so thin), the books look like they are floating. This is sturdy, not light and cheesie! Very contemporary and modern. Impressive design classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Space-saving! I wanted something space-saving to hold my books due to the lack of real estate in my very small bedroom. This was the perfect solution to display my books and love that I can see the titles horizontally instead of vertically. Visual appeal in a great design!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds expectations This is expensive but surprising it exceeded my expectations. I have bought two of these and could not be happier with the quality and design. You can get an amazing amount of books on the shelf and still be able to get a book out in the middle due to the multiple shelves. Really big books can be placed on the bottom. Happy, happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great design Most beautiful, functional, simple design. Bought for my teen daughter to organize all her books without taking up a lot of space. Base and spine are high quality heavy duty metal, sturdy. Only had two screws to secure everything. Amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding! The beauty of this brilliant design is in the amount of books that it holds in such a small space. It is sculptural and striking, It is a tad awkward to assemble, since both the base and the pedestal are heavy and must be aligned exactly, but an assistant or a workbench will make it easy. Even without either of these, it is manageable, even to the assembly-challenged. The ten shelves simply tilt in, so no problems there. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pricey But Perfect! The Sapien Bookcase costs more than I would like, but it really is attractive, efficient, and useful. It takes up very little space, yet allows me to easily organize and locate different types of documents / books / magazines / etc. At the moment, it is right next to my desk to organize the various things I am working on - paying bills, handling correspondence, working on volunteer boards stuff, and family items. It's useful for presorting my filing, too. I am thinking of getting a white one for my walk-in closet. I could stack several glass top watch and jewelry boxes, one on each 'platform'. Then I'd have the ability to see what is in each one and grab the box I wanted at the time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect We used this to showcase special, hardbound/library edition books in an artful way. It was easy to put together. A perfect, funky solution that takes up little space.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small footprint good for tight spaces I have three of these in white and really like them. The unit is quite sturdy. I use them to fit books in small spaces around my old house. Between the radiators and molding around my house, it's difficult to squeeze in regular bookcases. The only downside is that the little shelves can't handle larger or longer books or magazines. Only the lowest shelf could handle items like that. For smaller standard sized books or items it's great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Bookcase ever This is the 2nd time I have purchased this bookcase...first in the darker tone for my has lived in a modern apartment, a loft and now a more traditional layout apartment. I love it so much I just purchased the white one for my office at work....great to show off my business books in a way that is efficient and stylish!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really pleased I bought this bookcase for my psychotherapy office. After I got it out of the box, I had about 5 minutes to put it together before my first client arrived. It was a snap! Easy-peasy. It's very sturdy and well-made. It accommodates a lot of books. Looks great. My clients have commented on how much they like it and want to know where I purchased it. I will likely purchase another for the office and one or two for home. Thanks, CS!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sapien Bookcase This is a nice heavy duty spacer saver. Easy for two people to put the 2 screws in. That's all that needs to be done. I use this to hold small jewelry containers, and a small mirror. When I get tired of that I will probably put books on it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Space-saving Bookcase The Sapien Bookstack holds 68 of my books. It is a space saver and it is visually appealing. I love the optical illusion when you pull books out from the middle and it looks like the books above it, are suspended in air.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dark Grey Sapien Bookcase This is the second one I have ordered for my daughter. She loves them!! Of course, you MUST be certain to put your larger, heavier books on the bottom shelves.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Love the looks but did not last! I bought this and immediately fell in love. It looked great initially. However after few months (maybe 3-4 months) it started tilting and now it looks like the Pizza tower, totally bent. Very disappointing....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase This holds more books than I expected, and will handle even large 9x12 hardback books. Takes very little space, but the books are still easily accessible. It was easy to assemble, although a bit heavy for one person to do it single-handedly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking Space Saving Book Organizer Living in a one bedroom condo and being an avid reader, space is of utmost importance to properly display my books. Finally, with the Sapien Bookcase, I was able to organize and display my books in a very sharp and modern looking bookcase which easily fit in a small nook area of my condo. This was a perfect product that met my needs.

Community Q&A

Is the height/distance between shelves adjustable? If so, what's the range?

Asked by: Weeble
The shelves are not adjustable. About 5 1/2" between shelves.

Can this bookcase be wall-mounted?

I'd like to mount 3-4 of them on the wall in the upstairs hallway for a little library - having them free standing could cause trouble for cleaning.
Asked by: Piran
I suppose you could if you are a do-it-yourselfer. I think the base would need to be removed and holes drilled into the metal backing somehow, but it is not designed for this purpose as is.

I am considering this for piano music shelving. Has anyone tried this? I'm concerned that the music will eventually sag/droop over edges.

Asked by: Keyboardist
I have 500+ books of piano sheet music in my studio. I use about 20 of the Stockholm Bigso magazine holders for this purpose, on a bookshelf. You can still see the spines that way and they stay standing up. I'd think sheet music stacks wouldn't do well on one of these shelves here.

How much weight can each shelf hold?

We have some very heavy books.
Asked by: BunnyToo
I know the website "claims" that each shelf can support 20 lbs, but not even close. It's more like 10 lbs before the shelves sag down and the books slide off.

How many books on average does this hold? Is it more of a showpiece?

Asked by: snoogles17
I've got about 60-65 books at any given time. Really depends on the thickness of your books. You could probably put a few on the very bottom part of the stand too.

Instructions for small black plastic pieces?

This product comes with a bunch of small (about 1 inch long) black plastic pieces. How are these used in the assembly of the shelves? The printed instructions do not mention or picture them at all. And there doesn't seem to be a logical place to put them. I wonder if they are simply for protecting the corners of the shelves while in transit? Please advise. Thanks.
Asked by: Laureen
Toss 'em. Not needed.

What are the shelves dimensions?

What is the width and depth of the shelves? Are they all the same size?
Asked by: Tere
All of the shelves are the same dimensions 5.5" by 7.5" and there are 10 shelves. They are each 5" apart and are amazingly strong. I am very impressed with how sturdy they are. I have heavy books on these 5.5 by 7.7 shelf stacks and it is not wobbly and the shelves are not bendable at all. The base place anchors it all. It is a 13" by 13" heavy metal plate that the spine of the bookstack rests into, like a pipe into a shaft, and this holds it all together.

I assume this needs to be anchored to the wall at the top? Or is it simply a matter of stacking the smaller books at the top, larger at the bottom?
Asked by: PaulaV
no anchoring necessary ... you will balance the presentation of the books and the base is very stable

Container Stories
Room Makeovers

When Angela and David set out to transform an upstairs bedroom/playroom space for their two precious boys Max (4) and Daniel (7), they admittedly had a 700 square foot disaster zone on their hands. They enlisted the help of friend and stylist, Gena Sigala, to help give the large area some personality and order, which was lacking prior. The result is a sunny room full of spunk just like the sweet boys.
