Great looking and functionalStylish trash can. A little pricey for what you get but it's pretty durable. I haven't experienced the same pedal issues others are having. The custom liners work really well and this trash can seals out most odors pretty well. I enjoy the plastic liner you can take out so you can clean it out easier if needed.

Looks great. Pedal breaks.The pedal mechanism broke a week after we received it. The pedal is now lopsided and the lid barely opens. It is super disappointing because it is the nicest looking kitchen garbage can we've ever had, and it was not cheap!

Broken in 4 monthsBought this in April. Pedal broke in August 4 months and 8 days after receipt of it. Only one side of the pedal broke, but when I flipped it over to see if I could fix it, I was super surprised to see that one side of the pedal was screwed in place but the other side just a plastic piece holding it in. Terribly cheap construction for a $140 trashcan. I do not recommend anyone purchase this hunk of junk.

Broken in little over a yearI loved this trashcan and thought it would be worth the expensive price tag. However, I have had it just over a year and the lid hangs up. It gets stuck in the open position and will not close until you push on it repeatedly. We are a household of 2 adults so it definitely does not take any abuse. I am really hoping Kohler will make good on this since they offer a 10 year warranty. An expensive trash can like this should work perfectly for much more than a year or two.

Broken petalI really liked this garbage can sleek and modern but it’s less then one year old and the pedal does work correctly anymore. I’m not sure what the guarantee or return policy is but it should have lasted more the one year

Broken PedalPros: Loved this trash can before the pedal broke. Matte white color looks great & easy to clean. Cons: one person HH so not over used, but pedal broke 1 year & 9 months after purchase. Now must figure out how to recycle large, heavy, expensive piece of junk. Obviously the mechanism had plastic where metal should have been. Shame thought Kohler was top of the line.

Looks nice, but pedal brokeI love the look of this trash can, which is the main reason why I purchased this one. Unfortunately, the pedal broke last night when using it as normal. I heard a snap, and now the lid will only open about 5 inches, and that's only if I step on the left side of the pedal. I came back to the Container Store site to see if anyone found a fix for this and saw that others experienced the exact same problem but no solution.
I'm so disappointed that a product this pricey would break so easily.

Worth the moneyThis is a beautiful garbage can (if you can say garbage cans are beautiful). Love that the bag is completely hidden. Easy to change, quiet closing and finally....someone developed a garbage can that lets the air out when you put a new bag inside!!! Brilliant! Buy it, you will be happy you did! I bought 2, one for garbage and one for recycling and I’m so happy I did. Looked for a very long time to find a quality can and I am so happy I finally found these!

poorly engineered and breaks easilyThin plastic part bears the force of the pedal mechanism that opens the lid. Designed to break. No way this was tested by the engineering department that designed it. Container Store should not carry this product.

Was nice while it lasted but same issue as othersWe bought this trash can as it seemed sturdy and easy to clean, and replace the liner. It also has a nice matte fingerprint proof finish. However, 6 months after purchase I stepped on the pedal as I normally do, heard a big crack, and noticed the pedal was suddenly lopsided and the flap wouldn’t open. When we took a closer look, we found the same issue as other reviews here, the plastic bit that houses one end of the rod that operates the pedal/flap mechanism (underneath the can), had snapped off and the rod had popped out of it’s holder. It was a flimsy design, a very silly piece of plastic to hold a metal rod vital to it’s functionality. The rod has a screw fixture on the otherside which was solid so hadn’t broken. Really disappointed that $139.00 later we have a trash can that cannot be fixed easily. For this price I would have expected a better build. Up until this point I was happy with the product but reading the reviews, this is definitely not an isolated problem

Broken stepHad the exact same issue with the other reviews about the step. I don't understand why they don't do the same to both sides of the step. The other side with a screw is still working fine but the broken side was only covered by some plastics. Considering the price, I would expect it to last much longer than little over a year. I noticed in the Q&A session that this product has a 10yr warranty. How should I proceed regarding the broken step?

Broke almost immediatelyWe have two of these trash cans ordered at different times. We liked the first one, it's nice looking and has a soft close.
The second stopped working within months and now the lid flies up and slams down with a loud "BANG!" at the slightest pressure on the pedal, no matter how careful we are. It's unwieldy, unsafe to use, and loud.
We're sad being stuck with something we'll probably have to throw away. We wanted something that would last and not be disposable.

Step BrokeThe step mechanism is very fragile. It relies on a thin piece of plastic that will break if the step is pressed too forcefully.
I tried various glues to secure the plastic back together after it broke, but the piece is under too much load for any glue to hold it effectively.
(The connection on the other side is screwed in, and seems fairly sturdy. Too bad they couldn't have done the same thing on both ends.)

Step broke and I’ve only had it for 4 monthsI loved everything about this trash can when I first bought it back in July. I liked the look as well as the soft close feature of the lip. Today as I was throwing something out I noticed the step feature didn’t work anymore and I see a plastic part broke off of the bottom? I wouldn’t expect this at this price point of a trash can. I don’t even know how to go about returning this since who would have thought you need to keep your trash can receipt.

Sad!!!!I purchased this about a year ago and absolutely loved it until last week. The pedal broke on it and now it doesn’t lift. I was hoping it would last longer since it was a costly item. Wish I had still had the receipt. Anyways hopefully I can find another comparable that will last.:(

I Wanted to Love but Read BelowSo we purchased this about 6 weeks ago (8/19/19). it was right as the ELFA sale began. I ordered this along with my HUGE elfa closet renovation. I read all these wonderful reviews. and I too loved it for these last few weeks. but now every time we use the pedal to lift the top of the trash it makes the loudest most annoying squeaking sound. We never applied more than necessary pressure, I have always been gentle when lifting the lid to remove garbage bags. For $140, we should not be having this issue. I no longer have the box it was delivered in, nor do I have the time to lug this heavy trash Can (that has been used for garbage for 7 weeks) 45 min to the nearest store to exchange. Just a bummer when you spend this kind of money, and takes only 7 weeks for it to have issues. I love container store so much I am just upset at the quality of this trash can for how much I paid for it.

Step broke within 6 monthsI purchased this trash can in August of 2018 from here. After around 6 months the step broke. The step itself appears made of metal, but it’s housed with plastic on the under side. There are 2 pieces of plastic that hold it in place, one is more sturdy than the other. One side is a simple, very thin, layer of plastic that allows the hinge to bend. Considering you’re stepping on this with your weight this cannot hold long term. Which is very disappointing for a $140 trash can. I attempted to repair it but the plastic is so fragile and thin that putting it back together is temporary at best. You would need to purchase an entire new trash can. I completely regret the purchase now.

ReturnedI love the look and the sturdiness of it, but I returned it. The main reason was because it was hard to open at the top. If I was on the side of the trashcan, or only had a small piece of trash it was hard to lift the lid manually. I didn't want to have to use the foot pedal every time.

Love it! No fingerprints! Great size!I love this trash can. The rectangular shape allows for larger items to be placed in the can. I used to have an oval trash can and this one is so much better! You can really compress items down and get more in the can. I love the design of the inner ring that hides the trash bag. The bag fits easily and securely. You don’t have to touch the can at all... no fingerprints ever!

Everything it Claims To BeI am delighted with this trash can. The exterior is super easy to keep clean. There are absolutely no hinges, rods or other protrusions to catch the kitchen crud (except for the foot pedal which doesn't collect dust because it's stepped on repeatedly). The matte stainless finish doesn't show fingerprints. The lid opens wide when you step on the pedal and closes quietly. Regular 13 gallon tall kitchen bags fit perfectly and are easy to install. The trash bag doesn't show beneath the bag ring, nor does it slip off. The lid stays open by lifting the bag ring to its fully open position.

Greatness in GarbageI was very surprised to come across this garbage can. My last kitchen garbage can was purchased from the Container Store more than 5 years ago. I wanted something a little more stylish and fresher. This garbage can fit the bill. It has a really nice lid which closes gently (as opposed to my old one which banged closed). Also, the standard tall kitchen bags fit perfectly. They are not difficult or tricky to get just right-there is only one way and it fits snuggly. I was leary of some other brands where you have to purchase proprietary bags. No special bags is a bonus. Another odd benefit is that the garbage usually comes out shaped like a rectangle (my old one was round) and I feel like I can get more of these into my larger bin for eventual street removal. The most amazing benefit though is regarding my dog, Cooper: On my old can I had to put a heavy weight on the lid so he couldn't lift the lid. On this garbage can the lid is flush with the overall lid design and there is no way a dog could lift it up with his snout. Pretty great in my opinion. Wished I would have purchased sooner!

Worth the $I waited on this purchase for quite a while because of the cost, but it was 100% worth it. We painted one wall in the kitchen a matte black and wanted something to blend it. Absolutely did the trick. The functionality is great as well. I love that it fits standard garbage bags and also hides the white lining within the top, just wonderful!

The manufacturer has made the following improvements to this product:
Damper Product Improvement: Two-way damper cap changed from plastic and adhesive to metal and threaded
Base Product Improvement: Added structural ribs and increased radii around where the pedal pivot pin is inserted into the base.
There is also a 10-year warranty on this product, so it can be returned or replaced if defective.

Is it possible to store a couple of extra garbage bags at the bottom of the liner?
What I do now is keep a couple of extra garbage bags at the bottom of my can, then attach my garbage bag..then when I go to take the garbage out and add a new bag, I can just get a new bag from the bottom of the can.
