Ideal for the squeamishI’m really sensitive to odors but wanted to take advantage of having moved to a place with municipal composting. My husband, who creates most of our food scraps, couldn’t believe I spent $30 when we could just keep a bucket on the back porch right outside the kitchen. Four months in though, we’re both believers. It is remarkably low odor, and the lid is cleverly designed so you can hit the latch with the heel of your hand and thus use the container even when your hands are full or covered with gross stuff. I do recommend sizing up to 3 gallon bags (instead of the recommended 2.5 gal) if you are impatient about getting liners in and/or want to make sure you can tie up the bag. It’s a great product - I’d be buying one for everyone I love if they weren’t all more hardcore eco than me and either down on liners (even biodegradable ones) or down on things made of plastic.

Love itI have been using this for about a month now and there is no odor even though I use lots of onion and garlic when I cook.
The bags do not start breaking down too quickly but the bin is a little bit on the small side if you do a lot of composting.
I have noticed a few fruit flies every once in awhile but I am very happy with the bin.

Very disappontedThis is advertised as odor free. Its reviews were stellar. However, our problems with odors from compost in the house have multiplied exponentially since getting this particular product. I'm sorry, I had such high hopes, but it stinks. Going back to our leaky pail.

Surprisingly delightedMy husband and I have been long-time composters, and we've tried everything from worm bins to designer metal buckets. We bought this composter on the off-chance that it would be easier and more effective than our current container.
I cleared a space for it under our sink, and from the first hour, I loved it. Super easy to use, very little odor, and I especially love the button-opening lid. Best of all, it has large biodegradable bags that we can fill up, then put in our refrigerator until we get around to taking the compost out.

True to its nameA little skeptical about the whole no odor thing, but I sprung for this bin because I liked its aesthetics. Two weeks later I am sold on this compost bin and have recommended it to a number of friends. There is no smell due to the aerobic instead of anaerobic decomposition and it's very easy to use.
I have not had this issue but I'm glad I read the box of the compostable bags that come with the unit. Because the bags are compostable, they begin to break down with the introduction of moisture, they suggest you replace the bag every 3-5 days. Otherwise, the bag may breakdown just enough to spill it's contents all over your floor on the way to the compost pile.
Does the Container Store sell the white & black model of this compost bin?

Can you use this outdoors?
I'm wondering if you can use this also outdoors without also attracting a bunch of other animals or insects? Or if you would only be able to use it for indoor use?

It's plastic. It could. Not sure the plastic bags would survive for long in the freezer, for they are bio degradable bags. They start breaking down as soon as food gets inside them.

Can you use this item without the plastic bags that come with it?

No. See the green section on the bottom, this is an air flow area. In other words, it's open to the inside. You must have the plastic bags to hold your compost.

1.5 gallons. The bags are approximately the size of the ones you get in the produce section of the market. Mine usually fills up in 3-5 days and I pack the food in very tightly. So far the bags have not started breaking down before I dump them nor have any of them ripped even when I smash as much food in as I can
