Rated 4 out of 5 by from get it if it's on sale or you have a discount I've had a set of dark Connections shelves in my living room as an entertainment center for years--since before they apparently discontinued some of the items (larger, deeper shelves specifically) for whatever reasons. They come together quickly, have some (limited) adjustability), have a simple and modern look, and gravity makes them more sturdy as you put things on them. So when I moved recently and needed a small shelf/storage unit in my bathroom I thought I'd go with the familiar and try a small white version, Shopping online for them was easy since I already knew what I was looking at. I wasn't in love with the price, but I had a 15% discount code to lessen the blow. I picked them up at the store a couple of evenings later to save a few bucks. As always, the staff was friendly, professional, and helpful. The pair of white uprights have a seemingly durable, fairly classy white finish--I assume it's powdercoated. They're made of lightweight metal (I assume aluminum) and are very solidly constructed. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the relatively heavy shelves had a solid white finish on them (I assume a laminate surface) rather than the semi-transparent finishes available on other Connections shelves--this made them fit right in with the white laminated countertops in my new apartment. As with all Connections components, the uprights came with some safety-orange bags full of hardware components in order to secure the unit(s) to the wall. Because I rarely ever have small children in my house, and because they're still fairly limited seismic activity in our area, I've never bothered to use them, but I can see why many people would. Anyway, the piece(s) is(are) highly functional, adequately attractive, and reasonably well engineered for my uses. I really like having shelf units that don't require additional lose-able hardware components to assemble--I've had other experiences where I've lost one small component to a piece that was long-discontinued and ended up having to have replacement components custom-modified/manufactured in order to use the piece. What I'm saying is, if this meets your aesthetic and/or functional needs, get it if it's on sale or you have a discount and you'll be very happy with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Look great, could be improved These look fantastic, but could be sturdier. The wall attachment is also a little ridiculous, a non-matching metal angle that you zip-tie to the uprights after attaching to the wall. I was able to hide it pretty well behind a shelf, but it still isn't the most sturdy of shelving units. I wouldn't recommend it for people who are really worried about a bookshelf falling unless they DIY a better wall attachment system. It looks amazing though. Maybe have someone look at the design/engineering of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this product Bought a set of these (tall version) and really love them. Easy to put together and very sturdy. I bought another (short version) for another room in the house, and would love to be able to replace some old shelving with these. Very clean looking and holds a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bookshelves I am so happy with these shelves. They are sturdy and attractive, and the shelves are spaced so that tall books fit comfortably. They are modular so that more uprights and shelves can be added. And they stand on their own so that they do not need to be attached to the wall. Definitely one of my better purchases!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sturdy and Functional I bought Connections uprights and shelves as show displays for my business. I love how flexible they are - I can arrange them however I need for my space. They are super heavy once set up, which is a huge plus, but they are also easy to break down and transport in pieces.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it.. Great product that will last a long time, and as my needs and style changes this product is adaptable. I also plan on adding more shelves and uprights down the road. I am returning to school to finish my degree after 20 years. I needed a place to focus on my studies that was small and versatile. I debated purchasing this product because of the price, but after purchasing it I am more than satisfied. I will be purchasing more shelves and uprights soon to add to the piece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great versitility I've purchased Connection (R) components since 2008 and have always been satisfied. Their design allow me to change the cofiguration of my bookcases easily. They're solidly built as are the shelves. In addition, I used pickup at the curb for the first time and was very pleased. No need to schlep the kids out of the car - made the purchase/pickup trouble free.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent product Easy to move and adjust the shelving. No need for small clips to lose. The only issue is the desk is at an awkward height. We can work with it but it isn't ideal. A little more thought in that would have been good.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Shelves Ever These are by far the best shelves I have ever owned. They are sturdy, easy to move around, can configure in all sorts of different ways and they look great. Their sleek and minimal style will compliment any decor and the shelves are amazingly beautiful, too! I bought the ebony and the quality is great. I am using the two smaller ones and three shelves in an armoire conversion to a craft cabinet and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for a great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Bookshelves I bought the tall uprights for a library. I like geometric shaped art and the bookshelves are like an art piece to me. I bought the smaller shelves and cubes for cookbooks and odds and ends and love them as well. They were easy to set up... Just remember to anchor the tall uprights.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Shelving Unit Just purchased this shelving unit and 3 shelves. Did not see it in the store but decided to order it sight unseen. Was very pleased with the quality. Packed nicely and easy to set up. Very sturdy so I feel comfortable putting breakable items on the shelves. I wanted a shelving unit for our living room that would not appear bulky. I am pleased with this purchase. I just wish there was a store in Sacramento. We have to travel to the Bay Area or order online.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from nearly perfect All the other reviewers said pretty much everything there is to say about how awesome these are so I thought I'd play devil's advocate and list the few negatives I've found. 1. The bottom rung is too low to be able to put a shelf on and still fit a surge protector underneath. Not a big deal for probably 99% of buyers out there, but I bought my shelving unit to be a desk and I have to have the bottom shelf on the second rung from the bottom (about 9" off the ground) which shows all my cords and wires. 2. The shelves don't fit snugly between the front and back of the uprights; there's a half inch space between them and the uprights so they move forward and backward easily. They *do* fit snugly over the rungs, though, so they don't slide from side to side. Again, not a big deal for most buyers who just put them up and leave them alone, but I'm constantly reaching for things on other nearby shelves and the movement is a little unsettling. 3. The height of the rung you'd use for the desk shelf is too high if you intend to put a keyboard on it. It's about 31" tall. (The next rung down puts the shelf at about 23.5", which is a bit too low.) This is easily fixed by either getting a keyboard tray or raising your chair and getting a foot stool. 4. Six feet is TALL! And 11.5 inches is SKINNY! Who knew?!? Seriously, though, I read the specs and measured everything in my room and in my brain I knew what six feet and 11.5 inches mean, but once you put the unit together... six feet is TALL, man! I can't even reach the top shelf. And 11.5 inches barely contains my big ol' Comcast DVR and my computer has to sit sideways on the shelf. I knew all this before buying it, I just didn't picture it as well as I should/could have. It worked out perfectly for me in the end but sometimes I'm still a little surprised how tall it is. All negatives aside, I truly love this shelving system. It's strong, sturdy and steady. I have four uprights with three "columns" of shelves and I didn't even bother using the anti-tip brackets. I even use the uprights to help pull my chair in without worrying the shelves will tip over. Also, I'm a female in my mid-40s, kind of a couch potato and definitely out of shape and I had no problem putting these together by myself. They're heavy but not unmanageable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect I finally picked up a new TV and didn't like the way I had set it up, so I went looking for alternatives. As a grad student I wanted something either super unbelievably cheap that I could toss when I next move or high quality that would be worth taking with me. This set was perfect, it's modular so as my housing needs change I can rearrange the shelves and expand to fit whatever my current needs are. It's a very good quality and getting it on sale saved me a lot of money, I wouldn't have bought it at full price. Since my current space is pretty small I like the open modern feel but don't think it will be out of place in almost any decor. It's sturdy, even without being attached to the wall (since I can't do that here). The TV is a 26in and there's a little room on both sides so it could probably hold a larger one depending on how big the casing is. Although the back is open, the cords aren't too visible and if I had the time and motivation, I could use black ties and make them completely invisible. I'm still trying to arrange things on the shelves as I like them, but so far it's awesome. This would be great for a dorm or student in small living spaces, however, the uprights are a bit long, so moving them might be a hassle if there's a lot of other stuff to load in the back seat as well. Or just stick with the shorter version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really great bookcase Wow. I feel so lucky to have found this. When I was roaming the aisles at The Container Store last night, I happened to see a Connections set in sale section. Bingo! Exactly what I need for my new apartment. Luckily for me, the shelves were on sale for $9.99 each, perfectly undamaged. (As other reviewers have pointed out, shelves are normally $29.99 each. I saved $120 on 6 shelves.) Here are this unit's advantages: • The modular style makes it easy to haul. For a solo person, it was easy to carry each "ladder" by myself through my apartment complex, and then carry shelves in separately. • Extremely easy to assemble. All you have to do is screw three levelers into bottom of each unit. Then drop the shelves on the rungs where you want them. Once the shelves are on, they stabilize whole unit. • Extremely good quality, and very attractive. It's nothing like the cheap particle board bookshelves I've been accustomed to in the past. • The shelves are thick and well made. Also, they're deep enough that depending on depth of books, you can add small items in front for a decorative look. As other reviewers have pointed out, if you're good with a router, you could make your own shelves in whatever wood or finish you want. They also now sell a "driftwood" color shelf for an alternative to the ebony. • You can decide where to put the shelves. For example, you can put a shelf on the top rung for a finished look, or not. If you have really tall (or really short) books, you can insert the shelves to suit them. • The modular design is brilliant. One of my concerns in selecting a design was "How many shelves do I need to hold my books?," which are still in boxes. I only bought one unit at CS, since that's what I saw in the sale section. As I was assembling and starting to put in the books, I realized I could easily add to it! I bought the 11-rung uprights, but if I ran out of shelves, I wouldn't have to buy another 11-rung - I could just add a 6-rung on either or both sides, making for a very attractive wall unit and plenty of space. (Luckily, all my books fit in this one unit.) . I love being able to add on later if needed, so CS, I hope you will carry these beautiful bookshelves for a long time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful and sturdy I love these shelves! They are rock solid and you don't need any tools to set them up. I use them for books and display shelves. I've paid more in the past for shelves that aren't as attractive. I think these will hold up better over time. The open display works so well - large shelves tend to dominate a room but these fit in with overpowering everything else.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Shelves I absolutely love this shelving unit. It is so easy to customize to just what we want. We don't have a lot of space right now so out ottoman goes underneath the last shelf. When we do have more space we can buy more shelves. It is a perfect unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great shelving unit We were looking for flexible shelving for our loft and found these on the web. Not only is it very strong but it looks light and airy. Especially liked the flexibility- we bought 2 similar configurations- one for the main sitting area/living room, other as divider between office and dining area. Best of all - we opted to pick them up and used their call ahead service. When we picked up the 1st set, we had trouble fitting it into the car- but after the customer service guys cut the cartons and took everything out, we managed to squeeze the uprights into the car. It was raining the day we went to get the 2nd set. they directed us to back up to the store doors and helped us load right into the back of the car. Awesome! This was our first purchase from Container Store - but not the last.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous bookcase I needed a sturdy bookcase for my home office and didn't want one with the usual particle board shelves since those always bow under the weight. This one is well built and the shelves are sturdy. I love that I can reconfigure and add on to it later if needed. This was a great purchase, I would definitely recommend it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Deceptively stylish Looks better in person than in pictures. Do wish though that there was an 8 rung upright. It would allow for more diversity in set up visually.Be more like gradual steps rather than the sudden drop to the 6 rung.

Community Q&A

can one put one's on piece of wood for a shelf?

I need a different width for desk. Can I use my own wood and if so, what is the depth? (how much less than 13.5 inches deep?)
Asked by: barn
The "official" Connections shelves have grooves in the bottom that allow the cross-bars of the uprights to fit perfectly into them. You could use your own shelves, but they wouldn't really be stable unless you also put the grooves in the bottom of the shelves, which would probably require that you make perfectly straight lines with a router at very specific/consistent depth/dimensions and distance between the two grooves. Unless you're set up for this sort of thing, or just really want to create a DIY project where you teach yourself how to do these things, it might be easier just to buy the shelves (despite high cost and the limited finish selection). Obviously this wouldn't address your need for a different dimension--CS liability concerns might prevent them from encouraging you to make your own shelf/shelves, particularly at different dimensions than they've tested or have experience with.

How heavy is this shelving system when assembled?

Asked by: jennyloe
I don't know the exact weight, but it's not terribly heavy once assembled. I perceive the white shelves, which seem to have a laminated finish unlike the other shelves, to be substantially heavier than non-laminated shelves.

Is Connections 2.0 system compatible with the previous model? (If I buy 2.0 shelves, will they fit my existing system?)

Asked by: Felmas
The shelves will, yes. If you take the shelves off v1.0, and put them on the 2.0, they will fit. If you try to make a bridge between v1.0 and 2.0 they will not be level. v1.0 is 11 rungs, this is 8

Height of all rungs and

31.5 is far too high for a desk. this would give carpel tunnel quickly. is it possible to cut a bit off of the bottom of the legs to lower it..or is there a leveler that can be removed and if so, how much height is it taking up? What are the rung heights from the bottom up and from the top down? maybe it can be turned upside down to get the next to top level at a good height for a desk top?
Asked by: barn
The height of the Connections uprights cannot be cut or adjusted. There is no leveler that can be removed to lessen the height either. You may want to look into our elfa wall-mounted solutions since it we can create a custom desk solution for your needs at any height.
