Product Information

Add our InterMetro Shelving 3" Casters with Brakes to create a workstation or serving cart that's mobile, yet will stay in place when necessary. Under normal circumstances, two casters with brakes are used in conjunction with two InterMetro Shelving 3" Casters without brakes - like casters on opposing corners. Sold individually, these casters have a weight capacity of up to 100 pounds each, 400 pounds per unit.

Reviews

InterMetro 3" Caster with Brake is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from conflicted review While the casters function beautifully now, the installation was very difficult for 3 of the 8 I purchased. The casters would not thread easily into the housings which fit into the corner uprights. In fact it was with great difficulty that this was accomplished. The other 5 went right to place. Annoying.

How much height do the 3" casters add to the shelves?

I need an exact measurement.
Asked by: 2pay
Luckily or unluckily, there's no precise answer. I'm in the middle of assembling the shelves, so I can check easily. The legs come with leveling bolts. Each bolt goes into a socket in the base of a leg (I guess there's a nut inside), and can be raised or lowered to level the shelves on an uneven floor. All the way in, they add 0.25 inch (plus a bit for the rubber feet). All the way out, they are 1 inch -- but I think that's risky, because there would be little bolt left in its nut, so a little loosening could make the foot come off and the shelves come tumbling down! At a guess, I'd feel comfortable with 0.25 inch to 0.50 inch, the shorter the better. With the wheels on, same adjustability -- each one has a bolt on top that screws into the leg base, so you could level the shelves a little. All the way in, it's 3.625 inches. All the way out, it's 4.375 inches -- but with the same warning, at that extension there's not much bolt into the nut. So I disagree with the 6" estimate from mstover. So with the maximum available safety, the wheels add 3.375 inches net more than the normal feet (wheel minus leveling bolt), and I think you should screw them in as far as you can. Pushing it to 4 inches might physically be possible. But please note that I accept no responsibility for any consequences of you ignoring warnings and raising the feet high, like a shelf toppling over in your garage and dropping your family china on top of your car, which then rolls backwards off a cliff and explodes in midair, killing several bald eagles, so federal agents storm your house and arrest you on multiple felony counts of violating the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act 1940 as amended.

How many per package?

Is this a single wheel? or does this come in sets of 2?
Asked by: MarkF
One (1) per order / item. I had to order 4 separate wheels at $15 or $18 apiece (depending) and I got 4 wheels total.

Is the 3” measurement the diameter of the wheel or it’s height?

Asked by: Frank46
The wheel itself is 3". The height of the wheel, the rotating base above it, and the screw that comes out of the top of the base is 5 1/4". Another answer here says that it adds 6" to the height, but since I'm in the middle of assembling my shelves, I can't test it at the moment.

Stem diameter/compatibility.

What is the diameter of the stem, and are other casters with the same stem size compatible with the interMetro shelf legs?
Asked by: Nick123
We do not recommend using other casters with our InterMetro shelving. Our InterMetro units are specifically made to be compatible with our Intermetro casters

Why do you recommend placing the braking casters on opposing corners, rather than both on one end?

I think it's so one brake can be set regardless of the cart placement, but my husband has always placed the casters with brakes on one end. He has built hundreds of Metro shelving units over the years, so I hesitate to contradict him without understanding why you recommend placing the casters with brakes on opposing corners. Thanks.
Asked by: AnneW
To truly lock a mobile unit in place, we recommend placing lockable casters on opposing corners. This will prevent one end of the the unit from moving or rolling when it shouldn't.
