Item has crackedI purchased this item direct from a Container Store location in October 2018. It was fine when I got it and looks great in place. I just noticed that it has formed a large crack down to the middle. I have uploaded pictures to show what it looks like. I'm not how to even fix it. I'm extremely disappointed that this happened when we haven't done anything to it except leave it resting in place.

Not the quality I expectedI purchased this wood top along with other items to make a rolling cart for chopping/mixing items in my kitchen. I like the cart; however the board is rough and difficult to run a cloth over it to clean.

Works greatFirst I want to say that I bought these butcher blocks in the hope that they would be a close match to the sycamore melamine shelves that have unfortunately been discontinued. With the color variations in the wood the block does provide a coordinating look that blends very well with the sycamore and platinum we already own. I purchased two of these one in narrow and one in medium size to fit on top of the letter and legal sized elfa mesh file carts both in platinum that are used to hold scrapbooking & sewing supplies. If you add a little bit of Velcro to each of the four corners of the groove in the wood prior to positioning it on the metal frame it provides stability and the top is secure. Just make sure you have the top lined up evenly so you don't have more width on one side than the other.

Don't buy the wrong thing!!This butcher block top is awesome and certified food safe. Completely washable in hot soapy water and easily cared for. Be advised though, while building a custom kitchen cart out of cabinet-sized elfa, I then realized that butcher block does not come in cabinet sized. So I had to make a second trip. Whoops.

Restyled old black office filing cartI had an old black Elfa filing cart, and I needed a cart with drawers and a top instead. I took off the bars that supported the files, bought two platinum mesh drawers for pencils and such, and added the butcher block top. I am THRILLED with the results. The platinum goes fine with the black, and the butcher block top is beautiful and looks fine next to my cherry wood desk and table. A real quality product.

Heavy duty!I was quite surprised how heavy the butcher block was when I picked it up at the store. I guess I have gotten used to cheaper, softer woods. It is beautiful and I have no doubt it will give me many years of use.

Moving inMy husband and I recently moved into a SMALL basement apartment. We needed to find creative uses of the space we have. We found this little unit that was just the right size for our bathroom, and the top is ALMOST at the same level as the sink. This gave us more drawer space as well as more counter space. I wasn't crazy about the idea of the drawers being somewhat open, but the mesh front and sides seem to camouflage the contents just fine. I'm very pleased with our choice, and would recommend it to anyone with similar needs.

Love this new topI have purchased Elfa components for several years. I was somewhat disappointed not to find the platinium top available this year but this butcher block top really looks sharp. The design of the top has also changed so that it fits over the frame components not just on top. A great choice!

Dresses up the drawersI really like the butcher block on top of my shelving unit. I keep all my baking goodies in the drawers and my mixer on top - it really brings the unit in line with the rest of the room.

A Major ImprovementI originally bought my elfa freestanding drawer units for craft & miscellaneous storage. I repurposed them for use in the counterless kitchen of my new rental. I switched out the original laminate tops for these, and now they look like they were made for the space! I do wish the frames fit more snuggly in the grooves -- the top slides around a bit when I move the wheeled cart. Even though I'd put down trivets, the wood did react to heat when I set down a cookie sheet from the oven. The marks (which where shaped like the trivets) seemed to go away pretty fast once I removed it, though.

Will this work on a different brand of shelving?
I already own a 24" x 18" cart that looks exactly like the other brand, but I don't know what brand my cart is. Would this work on top of my cart? Would I be able to see a picture of the underside with measurements so that I can figure out if it would fit on top?

Are the butcher blocks heat resistant?
I'd like to use a convection oven underneath the butcher's block. Will that damage the butcher's block?

Heat will not damage our Butcher Block Tops beyond use, but it may discolor them - although the discoloration from the heat may fade over time.

I intend to use this piece alone. Will it lay flat on a flat surface? Also, can it be trimmed?

Yes, our Butcher Block Top does lay flat on any flat, stable surface. Like any genuine wood product, it can be trimmed, but we do not recommend this due to the likelihood that uneven edges or splintering may occur.
If another size board is needed, consider our Elfa Butcher Block Tops.

Will the top of this unit support a mini-fridge?
The fridge is an Igloo brand. Capacity is 3.2 cubic feet, dimensions are 19.75 x 19.00 x 33.75 Inches and it's weight empty is 61.9 lbs.

Are there holes on the underside of this block?
Is this the butcher top with holes that fit on top of the metro poles? I have one several years old that has dipped in the center, and I think I should replace it. I can’t figure out a way to fix it. It still works, but the dip just bothers me because my two blocks aren’t flush anymore.

The butcher block top has a channel on the bottom that fits on top of the drawer units crossbars. It's not a completely tight fit as it's meant to also be moved to a counter top as needed.
