If I use the clips on the shelves, does the weight limit change on the shelf not directly supported by 4 poles.

No, the manufacturer has confirmed that there is no affect on the weight limit of our InterMetro or Metro Commercial Shelves with use of Metro Commercial Shelf Connectors.

How does this work?

Are both shelves connected to the same "middle" post through both holes? If so, what purpose to the connectors solve? If not, could I connect an 18" deep shelf to a 14" deep shelf?

Combining 18" deep shelves with 14" deep shelves in the same unit does not create a structurally sound Metro Commercial Industrial solution and is not recommended.
