Why does the 2 foot shelf kit need 27 inches of space.

Although the shelves are 2 feet wide, an additional 3" width is required for proper Top Track support.

How much weight will the system hold? I would like to place storage bins on the shelves.

Keep in mind, weight capacity can be affected by many things like wall construction, the installation hardware and the installation process itself. Therefore, we do not have a published weight capacity of any one elfa product or solution. When installed properly and used with the elfa system of hardware, hang standards, brackets & shelves, it will support a considerable amount of evenly distributed weight such as an entire library of books, a complete entertainment system, a pantry full of food, garage equipment or a playroom full of toys & games.

what is the shallowest depth of shelf available? we need open shelves for small apt on wall where large mirror is in the middle. we would need 2 sets, one on each side.

12" are the shallowest depth available. For the 2' solution, you would be looking at dimensions of 2' wide, 12" deep, 7' tall.
