Rated 5 out of 5 by from A dorm room must have!! I ordered this for my daughters dorm room- took it out of the box, unfolded it, BAM, already complete, required 5 sec set up time and became the most valuable piece in her very small dorm room giving her so much added, very needed space!!! Very sturdy, very well built! 10/10 recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 50% of the units had major cracks -- poor packing I bought one pair of these in-store and took them home, popped open the boxes and they were good to go! 5 stars for the first pair. No issues at all, no assembly required. Went back a week later for another pair and not one but both were cracked to the point they were unusable. Boxing them back up is not a pretty situation since they're preassembled but the cracked pieces wouldn't fit back together. 0 stars for the second pair. So overall, 2.5 stars. The 2 units I initially bought look great and work fantastically, hoping to somehow get another pair that isn't cracked but not looking forward to the drive back and forth to the store over bad packaging.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to Assemble and Looks Great! I bought this for my classroom and love it! It's easy to assemble and looks great! I get soooo many compliments on it from the other teachers and the kids love it too! I especially like the nice looking wood finish. It adds a real touch of class.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best book case for the money - ever I'm a librarian so I've worked with countless bookcases over the years. Needless to say, my home is filled with books and this stackable folding bookshelf is the best bang for the buck/book that you can buy, I have many, in varying stains, that have moved with me through the years. They are SO easy to transport - fold up and go. They are solid and can handle the weight of anything you put on them. Still solid when stacked two-high (but don't go any higher). I have one in each bedroom, have cookbooks on them in the pantry, and give them as gifts. They're terrific!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rough surfaces and edges It's been a hassle since I picked it up at the store. The carton it came in was too big to fit in the trunk of my mid-size car. Unpacking it from the carton made a huge mess, and the unit was filthy. The shelf surfaces and edges are very rough. I used all-surface wipes to clean it, and the shelf edges shredded the wipe. Even the shelf surfaces were difficult to clean well because they're not smooth. The bottom is particularly rough. I have it sitting on carpet, but I would never consider putting it directly on a hardwood floor. I have other similar folding bookcases, purchased elsewhere, and they are of much higher quality than this one. I would take it back if not for the inconvenience. I'm not planning to stack it so can't really speak to whether it is sturdy when stacked. The Container Store usually has good-quality products, but this is junk. I only gave it 2 stars because I think it will work OK as a bookcase. If other customers got the same product, I'm baffled how it has an average rating of 4.8.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Assembly was a cinch I bought the 2 set for stacking. They arrived boxed separately, each with the hardware necessary to put the 2 units together. The units themselves, simply fold out -- couldn't be easier, although I managed to pinch myself with one of them (just take care and that won't happen to you). I was a little concerned about stacking them by myself because I have an injury but the unit is light enough that I was able to lift the 2nd unit on top of the 1st with fairly little effort. I'm 5'7 and I do see how it could be more difficult for someone shorter. Once the units were stacked together, I put the metal 'things' on with a Phillips screwdriver. The screws went in a little tight and I wasn't able to get them entirely flush but definitely close enough. I was impressed with how sturdy it is. I didn't bother securing it to the wall but if you have young children or are putting anything heavy / valuable on it, I'd secure it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Book shelve I plan to run down this weekend to purchase my third bookcase. I used to lug the heavy wood type and take days putting them together, but now!!! I bought the first one in brown for an office at my job. After taking it out the box, there's nothing else to do. It was so simple and easy I bought a white one for my kitchen. One more to go to place in my 'WOMENS' CAVE' Try it, you'll love it! Thx Container store for making my mature life easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great quality I found this bookcase, when I log on to The Container Store website looking for fully assembled bookcases. This book case is fantastic, I just took it out of the box and was able to start using it right away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Bookcase This bookcase is wonderful! Set up is easy, simply unfold it. It is a beautiful, well made piece of furniture. It is a nice size. I have it in the bedroom, but it would work in a dorm room, or living room, or anywhere, I am using it with two of the Bigso Oskar Boxes on the bottom shelf. The web site did not suggest the Oskar boxes, but as you can see they fit well on the bottom shelf. This bookcase has a nice finish (mine is Java) and would look lovely in your home too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bookshelves for Dummies I love these. Open box. Unwrap bookshelf. Open it into bookshelf shape and the shelves practically drop into place. A little "wiggling" to get things lined up and you are done! No need to try to hold heavy pieces together and get everything to stay at 90 degree angles while attempting to screw parts together. I have done a few "some assembly required" bookshelves, but I prefer pre-assembled furniture. This seems to be as close as you can get to pre-assembled these days without getting into expensive furniture. The ability to fold these shelves also makes it easier when I want to re-arrange furniture between rooms. Far easier to fold it up and move it than it is to drag a "regular" bookshelf from room to room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for my office These arrived beautifully packaged and were fully set up (I just had to attach the top module to the bottom) in about 10 minutes. Love them! Lightweight and not bulky and a very small footprint given how much storage they provide. Really love these and am considering purchasing more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!! I bought this for extra storage and organization for my bedroom and it is just wonderful! The best part was there was no assembly, just literally unfold the bookshelf and in seconds it was ready to use! The java color is beautiful! I am using it to store my text-books and it is working out just perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from VERY Happy These matched most all of my wood furniture quite well. VERY dark. Fit nicely where I wanted them to go, and fit all the (cookbooks) I put in them. Haven't yet really used folding feature. Would be useful if one needed portable shelves. Backs of shelves being open could present a problem but depending on aesthetics needed, might be an easy fix of fastening something along back, maybe fastening to the several back slats. These look so nice with my furniture and I had thought I'd have to go elfa to fit in the space I had, so I'm thrilled at whatever the price was. These do look fairly sophisticated, so if looks aren't important there are probably cheaper substitutes. Finish is considerably darker than underlying wood, so it seems like scratches would be very obvious. Okay, while I've pointed out lots of potential disadvantages, they are PERFECT for me and I was thrilled. Was able to put them together by myself and move across a room and I am somewhat physically disabled after being hit by a car.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SUCH GREAT SHELVES I have been looking for over 8 mos. for shelves in my area, went to The Container Store for the first time in April and saw these shelves. I ordered the two stackable ones and another one so total of 3 sets. They are awesome and look beautiful with my books displayed on them. The customer service was exceptional. YAY for The Container Store my new favorite store.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WorthThe Money We bought 2 of these for our sons room. I love that they were already assembled. All we had to do was screw the two shelves together but the directions were very easy to read and follow! (and I'm not a handy person) Looks beautiful! My son has all his books, board games, trophy's, ect... (lots of weight on it basically), but its still pretty sturdy! Definitely worth the money! And fold-able for the future move!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great shelving! These are so good that I have purchased over 15 of these over the years, usually 2 or 3 at a time during the shelving sale. Right now I have them stacked and loaded up with books, including many hardcovers. The shelves have not warped at all, even with the heavy load! The only thing that I have ever had trouble with is lining up the holes for the bracket that holds one unit on top of another. However, the fact that they have consistently stayed well-made and stackable with my older units over the years means the standards have stayed consistent. Note: Make sure you measure the height and depth of what you want to store on these, they are a bit shallower than other shelving. Thanks!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent simple shelf solution I have a relatively small space and needed a shelf that was simple, yet elegant, to help me organize my photography equipment. Two of these units stacked together with a few of the natural storage bins and I was golden in less than 15 minutes - assembly was easy-peasy. I have been searching and searching for a solution but everything was either too over-the-top, too big, or too trendy. This was just right. And the packaging that the shelves come in is brilliant as well....perfect to store and organise my larger prints! Happy! Happy! Happy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I got 2 sets of the Java solid Oak stackable bookshelves for my small NYC apartment and I love it! The best part is that there's basically no assembly, except for screwing in the parts to have them stack, otherwise - smooth sailing. I love the rich color of the Java and the fact that this bookshelf is just the perfect size - depthwise and width.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bookcases! I waited 6 months for these bookcases to go on sale. I took the plunge and bought 2 of them for my spare bedroom. They are great! And, they come pre-assembled so there was no assembly required. I would totally recommend these to someone who is looking for affordable and quality storage of books and other odds 'n' ends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great unit I own four of these units. I stacked two sets together. They take up very little floor space but create great storage space for anything you want. I have mine in my bedroom to store my purses. Now i can easily see everything. Would be great for shoes, books, or anything else. They look great and go great with my other furniture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from money well spent I purchased this item mainly to display pictures. It requires no assembly and is extremely easy to set up. The shelves are appropriately spaced and sturdy. Very good product for the price. Will be purchasing another one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what we needed for our corner space I was looking for a shelf that can be folded during Christmas time to make way for the Christmas tree, and this served its purpose. During the rest of the year, it holds books, pillows and other what-have-yous. And in December, it is easy to fold and store under the couch and the space can be used for the tree. Perfect!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful shelves! I received these shelves and they look fabulous! While adjusting and moving the bookcase because of top heaviness, I did manage to crack the wood somewhat. However, it's set and not moving anywhere. I placed wedges under the front legs and the bookcase is in place!

Anyone use these to store CDs?

I have 500+ CDs in Container Store acrylic contaibers (30/unit) and I need a place to store the with easy access.
Asked by: NancySue
This shelf is too deep to be convenient for CDs. They are more for books, puzzles, etc. I have 3 of these but for my CDs I got a local furniture place to make me something. A bit more expensive but purpose-built. Although now I mostly stream my music ...

Once stacked is it still foldable?

Asked by: PDN212
I have not tried stacking, but it seems like stacking wouldn't interfere with foldability. It might make it a bit more difficult and a wall to put the back of the shelves against might be handy when folding. It also seems like two people would be better than one, particularly if the one is shorter than the bookcases stacked.

sturdiness when stacked

how sturdy are these when stacked? is it anti-tip when a child crawls onto it?
Asked by: qevi
I have had these shelves stacked 2 units high in the past and loaded with books, but I had them securely bracketed to the wall. They were stable enough for normal use when bracketed, but believe it when they say they are not anti-tip. These are nice shelves. I like them enough that I now have 3 of them and am contemplating purchasing a 4th. They are not stacked now as I have enough space to spread them out in my current home HOWEVER i don't know if these shelves are strong enough to support the weight of a child even if the unit is securely fastened to the wall. They are built to be able to take apart and fold up, so the shelves detach from the frame without tools and I would wonder if the motion of a climbing child might make a shelf come loose.
