Do these pack flat, so that transport is easy? Are they boxed or not packed? Do all or any of the lookers products pack flat?

No, the Clear Lookers products do not pack flat.
For cubes that do pack flat, we'd recommend the products below.

Weight capacity
If laid on their side on a shelf (so that the opening faces out and not up), how much weight can the top support? (I.e., I’d be using a bunch of these on a shelf side by side to create a faux shelf, and want to know how much weight they’d be able to support from stuff on top of them)?

Our Lookers Cubes were not designed to be used on their sides or as bookshelves.
Used in the upright position, they can store and organize clothing and accessories, magazines, files, office essentials, craft supplies, or toys while keeping them on display.

Which size can you use for filing? Can you use them with hanging folders? How many?

The Large cube would be best for storing letter size hanging folders. Depending on how much is in each file, it would be safe to say you could store up to a dozen. More if there's not much in the files.
