Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Shoe Rack The shoe rack is performing perfectly...My wife has 36 pairs of shoes on the rack and it doesn't move at all...The key is to screw in the top and bottom hooks to the door...The hooks were never designed to hold a full rack of shoes by themselves...:)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great In Concept If you are going to mount this to the door or wall, it will hold a fair amount of shoes (which is good for me). If you are not willing to put holes in your door it will go over the door but BARELY. I couldn't shut my closet door after installing but worth it because my shoes were stored. After about 6 months the clips on the top failed and the whole thing collapsed. CS was great about taking it back but now I'm struggling to find a good solution for all my shoes!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Well made but could use a little tweaking We mounted this to the wall. The product is well made and suits my needs very well- however I wear a size 7 shoe and all of the shoes fit well, except for my demi boots, bulky shoes and high heels with standing ankle straps. Those took some thought. I ended up using the of top rack and hanging the boots backwards, by their heels. If you have space above you can put the demi boots on top, but I have a shelf in the way. This works well but made me which made me lose the row below for storage. 3 boots = 6 spots. The ankle strap heels I tipped to put in and will tilt to take out, but that may bean moving at least 1 additional shoe at times. Being a size 7 all of my shoes fit and I would like to get this rack for my husband's closet...but I am not sure his size 12 shoes will fit. I will experiment with mine before I buy...but I would love a bigger and wider version that holds less but give a bit more space between the rows for

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Try this door mounting technique The door mounting brackets are a known weakness so I decided not to use them. Since most interior doors are hollow I added 1x6 strips to the top and bottom of the door to provide a solid base for the rack. The 1x6 strips provide an added bonus that they further space the rack from the door which helps with larger shoes (shoes in photos are womens 9-9.5).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could Be Great I believe this could've been a great shoe rack but my door is too tall for it; the under the door hook was 7 or 8 inches from the bottom of the door. I didn't even bother putting the whole thing together because I know it'd be hitting the back of the door without it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful and well built Holds a large amount of shoes and saves a lot of space as it hangs on the door. High shoes push the shoes on top of them (the upper step) but we found arrangement that solved the issue for most shoes. The connecting straps to the bottom of the door are too short (at least in our case) but we improvised an extension that solved this.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poorly designed and poorly made This is almost the only time I’ve ever written a negative Ernie was but this shoe rack is just plain awful! Almost impossible for one perso to put together. It popped off the door about 12 hours after I “installed” it.! I’m very disappointed with this product

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Useless unless you wear a size 2 shoe The shoes don't stay on the rack - I wear a size 9 1/2. They are not even half way on the rack. You will need to hang it on the front of your door, if you hang it on the back of your door, your door won't open all the way.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Meh It looks nice but broke after a week or two. It’s not meant to actually hold 36 pairs of shoes unless all of your shoes are very lightweight. The over the door clasps broke and this was returned. The cashier, before even seeing the rack, knew exactly which one it was and said it’s a frequent problem!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from industrial shoe rack This product is pretty straight forward and serves its purpose. Fortunately I know how to use my context clues (picture on the box) to help during the assembly process; the instructions do not explain that the racks should be angled downward. I seemingly built the rack three times due to unclear instructions. It has cool straps that attach it to the bottom of the door!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Actual width 22.25" This was a nearly perfect solution However, the dimension given for width does not account for the tabs on the poles. It is only for the horizontal rack. Granted, this is only a problem if you are trying to gang mount them on a wall. Which I was, in a finite space. I should have double checked the measurement. I will have to overlap the edges, losing some of the aesthetics of the project.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from disappointed I purchased the gunmetal 36 pair over the door shoe rack. I put it together in about 30 minutes an hung it over my door. To my dismay in less than a week the over the door hook did not hold. It would not close over the door, therefore it kept sliding to the side. I was so sure it was going to work (after all this is The Container Store) that I threw out the box. If I had not I would have taken it apart and brought it back. Disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My shoes constantly slip off I had this for a while in the box before assembling it and hanging it on my closet door. It is MUCH bigger than I was anticipating, and for it to fit, I had to remove a magnetic piece in the door frame which helps keep the closet door closed. The worst part though is that my shoes CONSTANTLY slip off. It simply doesn't hold my shoes in place when I open and close the door. It is utterly useless for me. (I wear a 9.5 womens shoes.) I would have returned it for a refund if I hadn't waited so long to finally open the box and install it. AND I tossed the old one I bought this one to replace before realizing this one is useless for me. I've thought about getting gripping tape to try to keep the shoes in place, but really don't know if that will solve my problem. The shelves just seem to shallow.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didn't Hold Up Unfortunately, I will be returning this. One of the over-the-door brackets did not hold up, which makes this unusable.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice, Sturdy Rack, but Bigger than Dimensions This seems like a really nice shoe rack, BUT it needs well more than the 21" listed on its dimensions. I tried to mount it on a 24" door and it requires so much clearance that it needs a 30" door minimum for door mounting. (Maybe that's obvious to most people, but, sadly, wasn't to me.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Twice as Many Shoes! I replaced my old over-the-door shoe rack and now fit exactly twice e as many shoes in the same space. I couldn't get it to work well with the over-door and under-door brackets, but now that I have it screwed into the door, it works really well. Highly recommend this for people who are short on closet space.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great Potential, Disappointing Execution I have tried to make 3 of these work. Two days after I initially put it to use, it pulled away from the door. The rack itself seems to be sturdy enough, but the over-the-door hangers are way too weak to hold the weight 36 pairs of shoes put on it. I was able to flex the metal hangers with my bare hands! (and I'm not THAT strong, y'all) If you are able to mount this to a wall, you'll probably be just fine, but I struck out after 3 attempts to make it work as designed and ended up drilling holes through the brackets into the top of the door to try and make it hold without damaging the face of the door.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dont waste your $ 1. I was excited to see a sleek design for an over the door shoe rack 2. Disappointed as I did not expect such a poor quality product from the Container Store. I wish I had read the reviews. 3. The over the door hooks bent out of shape and the rack is falling off the door even before I put shoes on 3 racks and I am a size 6. 4. Poor design and non functional. 5. Complete waste of $ and time to assemble this product and now I have to take all the shoes off and dis-assemble this piece of trash. 6. Please contact me by email to process the return.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Falling apart after 6 months The door hanger has bent so much that it no longer goes over the door. This might be okay if you are using the wall installation feature, but not for over the door use.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Want To Like It I've had this for almost a year and I really don't like it. The idea is great. Utilize the behind the door space and store more shoes than a standing shoe rack. The execution is terrible. As other reviewers said, if you have larger than a women's size 6 foot, your shoes will hang way over. Since I have a size 9.5, mine fall off all the time. The clips for the door are really big and my door can't fully close. Additionally, the clips for the bottom don't fit/work so my shoe rack is only secured at the top. That, combined with the fact that the unit moves when I even try to to close the door, has caused it to bend. As a result, the whole unit comes off the door by about 6 inches at the bottom so the shoes fall out the back as well. Save your money and find a better solution. You end up just dumping your shoes every time you open or close the door.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing I really wanted to like this because I needed a storage for my shoes and I wanted to utilize the over the door rack. It was very easy to put together, but not really an elegant solution or functional. I was hoping that it would work like the elfa door solutions and be fitted to the door. Unfortunately, the over the door hooks are extremely large and can be seen when you close the door. The bottom hook is only a piece of elastic, so when you open and close the door, the unit does not stay securely against the door. I guess the only way to insure it stays secure is to screw it into the door - but I did not want to do that. Shame - it had potential, but fell short. I returned it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good idea in concept, not necessarily in practice The shoe rack was "assembly required". Fortunately, it was easy to assemble. The metal was attractive and exactly as described. I was less than enthusiastic when I actually put it on the door. The rack is billed as "36-pair". That can only work if you aren't trying to store running shoes or your feet are average or smaller in size. I wear a size 8 and I could not get 36 pairs of shoes on the rack because I had several pairs of running shoes, some loafers (Born and Eastland), ankle boots, etc. that were too wide to fit as a pair. That meant I could not organize the rack by function. I could only organize by size. The rack allows you to store the shoes in a flat position but that also means the shelf is deep--too deep for me to open my walk-in closet door completely and it would be deeper if you were trying to store men's shoes. I love Container Store products and this is not exception. I will use this rack in another room, perhaps for guests.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Feels like a bad break up....... This shoe rack was literally love at first sight. I’ve not been able to take my eyes off it since they day I bought it. That was until yesterday when the over the door hook gave out and all my shoes came crashing down on me. We are talking pointed toe stilettos (ouch ) I’m still in love with this shoe rack but I can’t find a way to buy replacement parts. I don’t want to rebuy the whole thing since I’ve only had it a couple of months. Sadly, like most relationships, it was too good to be true....... now my shoes just lay on a heaping pile in the middle of the room while I ice my bruises......

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst shoe rack EVER Moved into a new place and needed to save space. Figured TCS could do no wrong... I bought two racks. On both of the racks, the elastic pieces that are used to hold the bottom hooks in place aren't long enough, so the rack just dangles and doesn't lay flat against the door. Everytime I open the door the rack goes swinging. If you have anything larger than a ladies 8, don't expect your shoes to fit on the rack.

Community Q&A

Will this work for men's shoes? If so, still 36 pair?

Asked by: KennyC
Addendum to my previous answer: If you were to mount the bars on, say, a 3" deep rail or other stand-off you'd then get enough depth for men's shoes. That would just move the shelves out to support the shoes better, but wouldn't take up any extra space.

Wall mounted

Is everything included in order to wall mount the shoe rack or does it need to be purchased separately?
Asked by: jrsyshr
Works great on wall. Very narrow rack and doesn't take up much width in my closet. For ease of assembly I recommend putting the poles together and mounting the top and bottom shelf then mounting it on the wall. The other shelves are much easier to install once the rack is on the wall. I used ratcheted screwdriver and bit rather than the tool that came with the parts.

Does this work for taller doors?

My door is 92 inches - can this be hung over the door and hang loose with bottom hooks removed? Or does it need to be secured at the bottom? Thanks!
Asked by: lml525
This would fit over any door as it hangs over top of the door with the door hanger hinges. If it's a solid door, you can mount it directly to the door. If it's a hollow door, you'd want to use the hanger hinges to hang it. The bottom part of the rack just rests on the door. It comes with sticky round door protectors to stick under the metal hardware so that it doesn't scratch up the paint or scratch the door.
