Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't understand the negative reviews I really don't understand the negative reviews. My mother bought these along with a wall shelving system. Of course me being her handyman for anything she needs done around the house I was tasked with installing this. Yes the 3/8" hole is larger than other wall anchors, but this isn't your regular wall anchor. I practically had no issues installing these. They seem to be very strong, as they have to be and should be due to them "mushrooming" out as you tighten the machine screw. I was able to hit studs for every other hole, then use these on every other hole except for one. There was wiring there, and I used a large white threaded anchor there. These shelves aren't going anywhere. These are rated for 1/2" to 1" think walls. It would be nice if they made one for 1/2" thick wall only that was a little shorter, as I wouldn't have had an issue then with a shorter machine screw where the wiring was. These things are just very long when you insert them and the screw has to be very long to catch the tip. I would use again, I really don't understand the negative reviews as I installed about 9 of these and had zero issues with any going in the wall, or cracking, breaking. nothing. Next time I use them I'll make a video and put it up on youtube to show the ease of use I had with these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product Worth the trip to Container Store and the price. These anchors are easy to install and they are not flimsy. Wonderful product and all the other pieces to the Elfa closet line. Second house I have ALL closets and pantry in Elfa

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Elfa Custom Closet I was able to use some pieces I had from a former installation and buy a few more to install a new master closet. The build quality is very good with Elfa, though you definitely pay for it. And the flexibility to change the design is pretty limitless; I actually changed the closet design once I got pieces home and was able to easily return the pieces I didn’t need. But my favorite part was Contianer Store’s excellent customer service. At least at my store (Northbrook, IL), the staff is also super knowledgeable, efficient, and professional.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seems sturdy but takes a lot of turn to "set" The anchor is easy to use, and seems to be holding up the shelves well. Top track is on the wall, solid and sturdy. I used 3/8 bit as instructed. Some holes were tight, but with a bit of hammering, the anchor goes in nice and tight. At first, I stopped screwing it in when it didn't seem to catch. It just kept turning and turning. But after reading the reviews, I went back and continued to screw it in. Good lord it took really long, but it finally started to tighten. I stopped turning when the screwdriver started to lose grip. Overall great product but can be a pain if you are doing it by hand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from elfa Products We used the elfa Drywall and Plaster Archors installing our own Platinum elfa closet shelving system. They were easy to use and worked great. The system has been up and in use for weeks and no problems. We liked the elfa system so much we are buying another one in a couple months for our next project.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I work as a handyman contractor, and these anchors are in line with toggles, only behind snap toggles. The bad review must have marked the track wrong. Besides, the plastic end cap is not 100% necessary for strength, just aesthetics. Only problem with buying these, is the are made and sold out of Denmark. Going to talk to some American companies and share my experience. Excellen

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unreliable at best These Elfa drywall screws didn't work on 3 out of 4 of my Elfa closet systems. The last closet I've done - the hanging standard simply popped right off the wall. I did 3/8" holes per specs. I was able to use 3M drill-less heavy weight drywall screws instead, thank goodness those are simple to install!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shredded Simply awful. I bought them because they are marketed as drywall and plaster anchors. I have an older house with plaster walls in the garage. Using the smallest drill bit possible (without needing to hammer so hard you crush the anchor) resulted in holes that were too big. I hung an 80" elfa rack (which I love) and out of 10 holes, nine of these anchors spun. We tested our first item and the entire rack literally fell off the wall. Straight out of a Tim Allen Home Improvement episode. The bike rack did the exact same thing. The resulting 10 holes in my garage look like the remnants of a western movie shootout. Switched to something much less expensive from a big box hardware store and they worked! No spinning, strong hold. Will not use again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from My worst fears came true I purchased this product even after reading a few of the negative reviews about how fragile the plastic anchors are and how giant the holes have to be. Turns out, they were definitely right. 3/8 drill bit wasn't big enough, so we tried to round the holes out a little more. Worked for a couple holes, but the last hole ended up being too big and the screw spun freely. We destroyed several of the plastic achors by testing to see if the holes were finally big enough. Now I am afraid to try backing them all out to fix the final hole that needs to be redone. The worst part was how fragile the achors were. Even with soft drywall and gentle tapping, they would not go in without breaking and twisting too soon. Not a quality product. Now we have an unfinished project, lots of big holes in the wall, and we will need to look for a different set of plastic anchors from another company. If we ever needed to paint this room, we would probably have to redo the shelf completely because the achors won't withstand backing the screws out and screwing them back in again. Once this shelf is up, it better be up forever. Very disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Anchors Away I got an email from The Container Store asking me to write a review for these wall anchors. Really? A review for wall anchors? I mean, they either work or they don't -- what's to say? These worked. God, I would hope so -- that's what they're designed to do. But I'm writing the review anyway because I continue to be so pleased and impressed with the Elfa components we've purchased and the service I've received from The Container Store in designing my closets and coming up with great solutions. Six years down the road they still had my original plans on file and were able to help me with modifications when I moved and took my Elfa closets with them. So let's hear it for the wall anchors!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not easy to install Bought these to go with my Elfa office solution, which I love, but they were not easy to use - my wall is drywall to brick. Ended up going to the hardware store and getting a different anchor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shockingly sturdy drywall anchors These anchors are impressive: I have a couple hundred pounds of books and rolls of photographic paper for my office that is all supported by an Elfa track that hit only one stud and the other eight spots are all Elfa anchors. My walls are 5/8" drywall, so I cannot speak to the reviewers with negative experiences in plaster. For drywall, I have faith that these are just as good as having hit a stud. You need to have a 3/8" drill bit, and sometimes the hole needs to be rounded out a bit more. I simply used a hammer instead of the advised plastic mallet to tap the anchor into the hole. My theory being that gentle taps of a hammer are essentially equivalent: I think Elfa was convinced people would really "swing" a hammer and do more damage than good, hence the suggestion for a mallet. Your mileage may vary. I will say that the only real negative is that each anchor does take a while to install if done according to the directions: I start each one with an electric screwdriver and then switch to a hand screwdriver....but I feel like I am turning and turning for an eternity. Finally, just when my hand starts to give out, the screw won't turn any more (voila, the anchor is in place.) I suppose I am just superstitious enough about their directions that I have not chanced going further with the electric screwdriver. I have found that these are useful anchors to have on hand for other projects. When placing a 60" television on the wall (80 pounds), the bracket hit two studs: one on the extreme left end, one in the center. I wanted something to support the rightmost end of the bracket, so I popped in an Elfa anchor. The TV is still on the wall!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Invention! Holy cow! Where the heck have I been? Where the heck have these wall anchors been? This product made the job super simple! So, you drill the hole in the wall using the small drill bit. If it hit a stud, great, you are good. If it didn't, use these wall anchors, and feel just as secure and confidant about the job! Amazing! you WILL use these for other projects -whether Container Store related, or not! If I can do it - ANYONE can! Container Store is my new favorite place to shop!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Work so far These were pretty easy to install once we got the hole size large enough. I'd never seen an anchor like this before--very unique design. So far, the shelf seems to be holding up well. Time will tell how well the anchors hold. One thing that was curious was that after tightening to a certain point, the screw just appeared to spin freely after that. The top track seemed like it was well secured, though. Maybe that's just the nature of the design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quality and good engineering I have installed several brands of shelving/closet systems over the past several years. Elfa is by far the best, especially for a nice, finished look. The quality of the materials and excellent quality control make the installation smooth and straightforward. The Container Store staff is second to none! Their knowledge and expertise is demonstrated from the design to packaging the products after checkout. They are always so patient with us when entering and editing a design!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love these anchors! The Elfa Drywall & Plaster Anchors are an exceptional product. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Anchors As an aspiring DIYer, I have found these drywall/plaster anchors to be extremely helpful and easy to use in my elfa installations and other non-elfa projects. The installation is straightforward enough and they seem to provide a great foothold in the wall.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Seriously heavy duty drywall anchors I installed some fixed elfa standards for shelves with some of these anchors. I filled the shelves with heavy reference books and, they held up perfectly. The only problem I had with these anchors was when I tried removing them - some of them would absolutely not come out of my plaster walls.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good hardware for the job Have installed 6 Elfa systems and count on the mounting hardware to be solid. These anchors really do the job. Highly recommend following the directions, having correct drill bit size and a good power drill/driver. I set the drill driver tension to "3" (low) on my Dewalt cordless driver to avoid over-tightening or stripping the anchor.

Community Q&A

what is the weight capacity for Elfa Drywall & plaser anchors?

Asked by: Angelita
Since the weight capacity can be affected by many things like wall construction, the items stored, and the installation process itself, we do not have a specific weight capacity for the Elfa Drywall & plaster anchors. If installed properly and used with the Elfa system of hardware, framework, and brackets, it will support a considerable amount of evenly distributed, static weight.

Putting in garage - behind the drywall appears to be a thin wood that covers the wall.  So, what to do?  Do I simply drill a hole big enough for the anchor to go through both the drywall and the thin wood and proceed as usual?

Asked by: Elfa123
You'll probably want to measure the overall thickness of the drywall and wood before you proceed. The drywall anchors should work as long as the overall thickness is no more than 1". If it's thicker than that, you may want to use toggle bolts.

My Elfa shelves in the closet came down the other night. We had used 9 drywall screws and anchors. Unfortunately all studs are outside the range of the holes in the Elfa base support. Can I get a base support with holes where I need them?

Asked by: Antonie
It was easy enough to hand drill new holes in the top track that lined up with studs. None of the holes lined up in my case. Of course TCS recommends against drilling the top track for liability reasons. Just make sure the new holes are centerline with the old and that they aren't too close together as to weaken the track. Use a punch to get a good center, then drill with the approx same size metal bit. New holes can be a bit smaller as the factory holes are bigger than the screw shank. Doing this I hit 5 studs with one track and 3 with a smaller track, only had to use 1 drywall anchor to cover a far edge. The decor covers will hide all the holes after install.

Can the screw be screwed in & out of anchor multiple times once anchor is set & tightened or is this like toggle bolt where u can only screw in once?

I am wondering about what would need to be done if I happened to strip one of the screws, for example the fourth of five screws I will be using, and needed to remove that anchor and install a new one. In that case I would need to remove the three previously installed screws to have access to the fourth screw that I messed up on.
Asked by: unfolded
The screws themselves can be unscrewed and back in repeatedly. The anchors cant be removed and then reinserted..

I have 2” thick solid plaster walls

I live in Fort Lauderdale is a 1968 building. The walls are solid 1.5” thick metal studs with plaster between the studs and then a skim coat. So if I drill a 2” deep hole it would be through to the next room. Which anchor should I use?
Asked by: Desperste
If the wall is indeed two inches thick and made of metal studs filled with plaster it’s not going to be structurally sound enough to install on. That being said if the wall was filled with poured concrete which I would think would be more common they could use concrete screws provided they could find them 1-1/2” long . Either way 2” thick wall does not seem like a wall I would feel comfortable putting a lot of weight on. We might suggest freestanding for this particular solution.

Colors to match Elfa standards

Do the heads of the screws come in white and platinum to match the colors of the Elfa standards?

No. They only come in a silver/metal cover. However, we do have covers for the hanging standards as well as our top tracks to hide the screw heads.

Elfa pantry weight load with only drywall anchors

We recently installed Elfa for our pantry. This space is only 25 inches wide, and doesn't have proper studs in the usual places. My husband thought we would be able to hit one, but installing the shelves as directed we were not. So the whole thing, 6 shelves, is supported by three Elfa drywall anchors. The shelves look great and everything is very well made, but my husband is convinced that they will not be able to hold much weight safely. As in, no canned goods allowed, no small appliances (like a coffee maker), no large containers of liquid, and I'm pretty sure that when I refill the sugar and flour canisters he won't feel safe about them, either. Using just properly installed drywall anchors, can you please give me a range of a weight limit? Otherwise this pantry is going to stay half empty, which defeats the purpose of installing it. Thanks
Asked by: WeightFears
When installed properly (into studs where possible and using our Elfa Drywall & Plaster Anchors where studs are not present), our Elfa solutions can support up to 75 pounds per linear foot. The stability of an Elfa Easy Hang solution is actually enhanced the greater the weight placed on it.
