Poor ConstructionI have an entire Elfa Closet system that I love. I purchased this rod as I travel alot and it really helped to organize. However, I had to replace it after a year and now the replacement is also broken.
This is very poorly constructed with plastic holders that hook to the wire shelves. They break very easily. They need to be redesigned in metal.

Breaks easilyThis is a great accessory for Elfa closets. One major caution. I have broken the front plastic hanger piece on three units. The front mounting plastic piece is VERY fragile and you have to be super careful when bending it to fit between shelf wires. It needs to be made of an improved flexible plastic. Once mounted successfully it is a very handy add-on.

Best Elfa Component EverI’ve spent thousands of dollars on Elfa closets, shelving, and office space and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT ALL. However, the best Elfa component I’ve purchased is the valet rod. I use the rod every night to prepare for the next day. Selecting my clothes the night before keeps me on time and helps to make my day go smoothly since I’m not having the battle of the clothes every morning. This rod not only holds my clothes in preparation for the next day, but I can steam my clothing while they’re on the rod ... super convenient.
If you don’t have this rod I’d recommend that you run (don’t walk) to your nearest Container Store and pick one up. You won’t regret it.

Just what every closet needs!Love this valet rod. Didn't have this in my present elfa closet and saw this item when designing another closet. Bought it for both my closets and couldn't wait to go home and put it in my present closet . Wonderful item!!I recently installed a pocket door on my closet and lost the ability to use an over the door type of plastic hook to hang clothes on. This presented me with a problem as I made good use of that hanger. I was delighted to find this expandable Valet Rod. It was inexpensive and easy to install on my Elfa shelving. The fact that it expands is wonderful. Finding this item made my day.

Keeps breakingI’m currently on my third insulation of this product. While easy to install, putting more than a few garments on it causes it to crack and break. Removing the broken piece in the back is extremely difficult. Unfortunately since I have elfa, this is my only option for a valet.

GREAT TOOL!I had an ELFA closet installed and it looks wonderful! These valet rods are perfect for hanging clothes for work the next day or hanging to dry from the washer! They are so convenient to have in the closet that I had to purchase 3 more to add my closet. Great buy and an awesome use!

Careful moving!I had my Elfa closet system installed in the fall. With the upcoming season changes, so came the change in design of my closet.
I had to move the our expandable valet rod & it broke when I move it. Unfortunately, I had to buy a new one. At least there's a Container Store nearby.

Tiny item great capacityGot this for my husband who loves to choose his outfit the night before. Installing it was a bit tricky for us at first since it didn't come with any instructions. Took him a few tries to finally get it correct. But since then, he loves it. Been using it and saying how easy this made his life. We also tried with 2 outfits- one for him and one for me, works well too.
Would recommend this product. And when not in use, simply slide it back.

Expandable valet rodI ordered the wrong size, but I can use these in my laundry room, which has been elfa'd. Will order different size. However, these are difficult to install. I gave up the first time. Will try again when I muster the energy.

Best gifts come in small packagesWe helped convert a bedroom to a nursery in our daughter's house. She presented us with our first grandchild just before Christmas. We had converted her nursery closet to elfa as a group decision. Just after Christmas I saw the elfa valet on the web site. Thought we would get it and surprise her with this little closet addition. It took all of five seconds to attach it. The elfa valet rod couldn't have been a better choice! She loves it! Thanks elfa and The Container Store!

valet rodI added this to my closet about three weeks after the Elfa components had been installed, and I am crazy about it! I discovered a picture of it while browsing TCS site; not sure why the designer didn't suggest it. Such a simple item, yet it really helps! I use it to hang items when deciding what to wear to see if I like the way things look together - usually putting the jacket on the rod and holding pants below it. When I have decided what to wear, I put the outfit on the valet rod, so it is easy for me to grab in the morning when dressing for work. I leave the hangers on the rod, so they are accessible when I want to rehang anything. It took literally a minute to install, and it saves me so much time!

Very useful until it breaksWe installed two of these and have found them to be very useful. Unfortunately, the plastic 'clips' that attach the rod to the shelf eventually becomes brittle and snaps. We are now in the process of replacing the second item. When it works, it's great!

Smaller One Does NOT Pull Out Far EnoughThe smaller one is way too small and doesnt pull out far enough but to hang one thin shirt. After installing it we just kept it installed and bought the larger one for another area which works fantastic. Do yourself a favor, buy the longer Valet Rod!

Works well...until it breaksWe've used Elfa shelving for the past 8 years and the valet rod has always been a part of our closet designs. It's there when you need it, disappears when you don't, and does a great job holding a a few pieces of clothing. That being said, the plastic fittings are made of polycarbonate and have a tendency to become brittle and break after a year (or so) of normal use. Break #6 happened this morning. The Container Store has replaced mine for free each time, but I'd like for the design to be changed so this doesn't keep happening.

love it but plastic is brittlelove this item - just want to give others (and the Container Store) a heads-up that the clear plastic parts become very brittle over time. I have attempted to move one, only to have it snap off and become unusable. I later tried to move a second one (thinking I had just not been careful enough the first time). The second one snapped in a different place (but same type of plastic). I have used Elfa products for years without any problem, so I am surprised at this construction. Container store was kind enough to send replacements.

12" Valet Rod IneffectiveI have Elfa products that are 35 years old and still work as well as their first day of use. The Valet Rod concept is wonderful, but when used with 12" ventilated shelving, the 12" valet rod does not extend out over the edge of the regular hanging clothes. The items on the Valet Rod "drape" over the hanging clothes, causing wrinkles in both sets of clothing. I hope Elfa takes note and re-engineers this wonderful idea. Until then, skip the 12" Valet Rod.

Great idea but came up shortI love the valet rod idea but my shelves have clothes under them so when I have something on the rod it doesn't fit right. This would have been perfect if it extended out a little further. So sad I had to return it. Back to the drawing board.

Expandable Valet RodMy husband and I each got an expandable valet rod to help organize our clothes for work. We like to put our clothes together the night before, and this rod helps to arrange it all. I also find that the rod is great for setting aside different items that I want to pack for vacation, so I don't wear it during the work week.

Favorite Part of My New ClosetI LOVE this feature in my new closet. I plan my outfit for the next day and this helps me to get ready for work more easily each morning. I use this feature when putting laundry away. I can hang my clean clothes on the valet rod and hang my clothes in the organized fashion in which I have designed my closet. I LOVE this feature.

Neat but brittleWas really excited about having a couple valet rods for use in our laundry room. They work pretty well, but after only a few weeks of use, I decided to move one to a better location. When I did, one of the plastic supports just crumbled. Hopefully, I can exchange it for a new one since the whole point of elfa is not only storage but flexible storage. I was a little surprised at how easily it broke considering the sturdiness of everything else elfa makes.

Great addition to Elfa systemI wasn't even aware of this product until the Elfa consultant recommended it., so we got one for our new Efla closets. I am so glad we did! It is a small extra, but makes a huge difference in the utility of the closet. I get ready in the closet in the mornings, and the valet rod lets me set my clothes out the night before so I can get dressed faster.

Best detail to add to the closetIt is perfect addition to the closet. I use it everyday. You can have another to be super organized.
Can this be used for *permanent* hanging/display of multiple garments?
I was considering using the valet rod in lieu of a standard hanging rod to permanently (i.e., not temporarily) hang several long-hanging garments, e.g. suits or coats. The idea is that these garments would essentially always be "on display". Will the valet rod be able to handle all that weight on a permanent basis?

I'm not sure - the parts that hold the rod in place are simply plastic. I don't think they are meant for anything permanent.

Can the 16" be used with a 12" shelf?
I got a 12" for my 12" shelf and 16" for my 16" shelf, but the 16" is the only one that pulls out long enough clear the clothes rod underneath so that the item on the valet is hanging in front of the row of clothing, instead of draping over it. This makes the 12" useless IMO but I'm concerned that the more shallow shelf might not "fit" the longer-expanding valet rod.

I agree with you that the 12" one is useless. We installed it and NEVER use it. Fortunately, we have a large elfa closet which included some 16" wire shelves and the 16" valet works fantastic. We asked at the store and they said they are not interchangeable but when I look at it and do some measuring it seems it could be "rigged" to work....again, just a thought.

Can you get a replacement part for the plastic clip at the rear of the expandable valet rod? I
I have the Elfa 16" expandable valet rod, but the rear plastic piece needs to be replaced/no longer attaches to shelf in the rear.

How to add elfa Expandable Valet Rods?
Bought the elfa Expandable Valet Rods and tried to install it without removing anything but couldn't. HELP!

It comes with instructions and takes only a minute to install. I didn't have to add or remove anything; it just snaps into place on the wire shelf. Try it again! I really had to push to get the back portion to snap into place.

The valet rod is compatible with the rod and rod holders. In other words you can install a valet rod on a shelf that has a rod underneath it.
