The top is made of MDF (medium-density fibreboard). There is not a specific weight capacity, it is exceptionally sturdy and will support a considerable amount of weight.

I want to sit this on an old school desk that's 33"w x 17"d x 27"h to I would use for paints (watercolor tubes), watercolor paper pads, a few books. Is it sturdy enough? Can the metal be painted & the wood stained to match the desk? Shelf weight limits?
