InterMetro Baker's Rack is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little workhorse for 20 years! Onto Rack #2 My kitchen is light and airy but it has five doorways and two huge windows, hence not enough cabinet space. This rack has been a life saver. Got the white baker's rack about a year after moving into my house, so have had it for about 20 years now. We hang a ton of pots from the rack, store large pans and cookbooks on the two lower shelves, canisters and decorative items on the top one, and the butcher block holds my Kitchen-Aid mixer, a toaster and bread box. We even had a CD rack attached to one side (now a relic of the past, but it held a lot in its day). The unit has held up to heavy use, but In the past year it has started looking a bit yellowed and no amount of cleaning will get it white again. The white coating is starting to peel off in a few small spots too. So, we decided to replace the old one with stainless steel, which will match the appliances we've updated as the old ones died, The butcher block is still in great shape (I wipe the wood down with food grade mineral oil a few times a year) so I was happy to see I could buy the poles and shelving pieces separately and re-use the original butcher block. The old shelving is still super strong, so we'll be using it for basement storage. I put it together myself last time and I think it was pretty easy. It holds so much that we really can't imagine the kitchen without it. Even though we plan to sell our house in the next year, which means we may not use this for that long, it is well worth it since it would be impossible to organize our kitchen without it, short of a complete remodel, and it could come in handy in a condo or apartment when we downsize. I just wish I could get the 14" shelves in a 48" length and make a slightly longer baker's rack. The 14" width is a perfect size even for storing our lobster pot and other large items. Since I have room for a longer shelf, I had considered getting the full size 5-shelf unit with the pot rack for even more storage, but the stepped back design of the baker's rack makes it seem less bulky, and I think that is a big benefit of this design. The butcher block also gives it more of a farmhouse kitchen rather than industrial feel. It's a handy rack and holds a lot in a small footprint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Overall satisfied, but a few QC missteps In general, I'm pleased with my purchase. It added a lot of much-needed storage to my inefficient rental kitchen, and looks good doing it. But I can't give it five stars, for the following reasons: 1) The item arrived with four packs of faulty sleeves -- not a single one would lock into place in the grooves on the pole. My guess is they were for a different item. CS rep was very helpful, of course, and sent me new sleeves immediately, which fit. I noted they were packaged in a different-colored plastic pouch. Also, they are much less solid feeling than similar plastic sleeves I've used in the past for this style of metal shelving. 2) I suspect I received part of a return. Two of the poles are scuffed, and one of the plastic end caps on top is seriously mangled. 3) The cutting board could be cut to fit more tightly on the shelf. It's about 1/4" too narrow, front to back, so the shelf wiggles a little. (Also, be aware that the wood is not sealed - I put a glass of water on it a few minutes after assembling, and now there's a white ring.) 4) The hooks (rectangular shape) don't easily accommodate my All-Clad handles (ovoid-shaped hole), so one or two are "sticky" on the hook and not easily placed on/off. So, while I'm happy with my purchase, I think for the price a little more attention to quality control is called for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from GREAT RACK - HIGHLY RECOMMEND I just finished putting this rack together and am so happy I made this purchase. At first due to the loose pieces I was a little intimidated but it really was so easy to put together. I am in no way a handyman but figured it out quickly and it required no real strength. It is attractive (and I am an Interior Designer), perfect for a small kitchen and high quality. It has given me significantly more storage space. It also seems so very durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST BAKER'S RACK!!! I recently downsized and moved into a small 2 bedroom apartment. The kitchen was a galley and had minimal counter space as well as no storage for my pots. Although this rack cost a little more than a cheaper version that I purchased recently, the quality is way superior and taller. My pots hang nicely and the shelves hold up to 300 pounds of items. My expensive but large pots and pans stack very nicely. I am so thrilled with my purchase!!! I wished I had ordered from the Container Store in the first place. The Container Store has never disappointed me with the quality of their products. Merchandise from them may cost a little more but it is well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Industrial, yet cozy, and super functional! I had a too-large kitchen cart previously occupying my breakfast nook. So I was looking for a multi-functional storage system that looked attractive and could also serve as extra counter space. I needed something shallow in depth so it could fit in my tiny breakfast nook in my galley kitchen. This fit perfectly in the space I had, and now I can for a table and two chairs in that area as well without compromising on function!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Kitchen Storage I lived in a tiny apartment with literally 6 inches of counter space. I purchased this product online and picked up the pieces at my local Container Store. I had the perfect spot for a kitchen cart, but couldn't find anything to fit. Miraculously, this cart fit perfectly. It was easy to assemble and served the dual purpose of counter space + storage space. Now, I have a much larger kitchen and am buying parts to turn it into a bar. This product is versatile, convenient, and visually attractive. I highly recommend it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Maximize Space We recently remodeled our cottage and wanted a closet near the kitchen to store extra china, appliances, serving pieces and tablecloths. Items not used on a daily basis but essential to entertaining. The closet under the stairs became the perfect spot. However, it was too narrow to accommodate built-in shelving on both sides. We headed to the Container Store for a solution and found the InterMetro Baker rack. We purchased two and solved our problem. We also purchased a clear plastic suit bag to 'contain' the tablecloths. Now these items are all in one place, visible, and the need to search cabinets for them has been eliminated. An extra benefit was we were able to use a couple shelves for extra wine storage. We love this shelving! (I attempted to upload a picture to show this solution but it wouldn't load. :-(

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tiny kitchen savior We've had our baker's rack about four months now, and even after loading it up with all of our stuff and using it every day, it's still in great shape and so practical. Our NYC kitchen has no counter space, so we use the butcher block top for all of our chopping and mixing in addition to using it for storage. It also allowed us to hang most of our pots and pans without having to install a pot rack into the wall, which is great since we're renting and aren't particularly handy. The only flaw in the design when you use the butcher block for chopping, and especially for slicing bread, is that it's difficult to clear off without getting crumbs in the crevice between the edge of the butcher block and the metal shelf that holds it in place. Usually countertops hang over a bit, but this is the opposite--the butcher-block is recessed a bit, so it's extremely difficult to clean off crumbs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Little Bar I LOVE my Baker's Rack. I use it more as a bar and cookbook organizer. I bought the wine rack shelf and two other shelves that hold cookbooks, wine, and odds and ends. The top rack has display cookbooks and some decorative details and I hang cute tea towels on the back. The wood is where our keys go and has our nice liquor bottles on it as well as a basket with the bottle openers and bottle stoppers. I seriously just love it. Totally easy to put together and totally stable. Have a big version in my kitchen too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love this bakers rack I bought two! I had this for two years, and when we sold, it conveyed with the property. We missed the ease of use and the organization, so we bought a new one for our new kitchen. It is so practical, and keeps kitchen tools at your fingertips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Purchase Baker's rack is well made and very sturdy. It is also attractive and its size is perfect for a smaller space. The butcher block top is very nice and extremely durable and heavy. Only complaint is that there were no instructions included on how to put this together. It didn't take too long to figure out - but it would have been nice to have an instruction sheet. I highly recommend this rack for anyone that is looking for utility and nice appearance.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great addition This looks a bit commercial but that is what I wanted. Holds mixer and blender with ease. The only complaint is that the photo shows baskets on the side for additional storage. As a matter of fact, the online site recommends the basket, but the ones they show CANNOT fit on the baker's rack. Is anyone minding the store?? very disappointing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Baker's Rack (Silver) I ordered this online for curbside pick up and wishing I purchased it at the store instead. Pick up was easy and customer service was excellent, but since all the parts where wrapped in plastic for easy transport I did not realize till I got home that the poles where all scratched up and bottom stopper on one of the poles was defective. It wasn't just a few little nicks, it looked like it was used and returned. For an item that cost nearly $200 I was disappointed. I would of returned it, but it's a bit of a drive, so I ended up keeping it, at least it was on sale. If the poles weren't worn I would of given this item more stars for the size and amount of storage. Highly recommend purchasing at the store so you can inspect the parts before heading out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Changer I live in NYC and have one of those kitchens lacking any counter space. Cooking was such a chore, running bowls in and out of the dining room, cutting out there, etc. But this was the perfect addition. It's stable, it's useful, and it looks great. And the price can't be beat (trust me, I tried). You will not regret this purchase. If you need it, get it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super sturdy - Extra Counter Space in a tight spot This was so easy to assemble and added a great sturdy work space in my small kitchen. It is the perfect height to be extra counter space and I got the butcher block top so I can prepare food on it. I store my small appliances on the shelves for easy access. It has already become an essential part of my kitchen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful addition to my kitchen! I love this baker's rack! It was exactly what I was looking for and the chrome color matches all of my kitchen appliances. The butcher block is heavy-duty and beautiful. The hooks make storing pans so much easier and saves so much needed kitchen space. I can't wait to find more attachments to make my kitchen even more user friendly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Perfect Unplanned Purchase! I went to the Container Store in Scottsdale planning to buy an office paper sorter. While walking the aisles of the store, I happened upon this baker's rack. I had always wanted a sturdy, space-saving, nice-looking yet affordable baker's rack. And there it was!! I bought it, we set it up that same night and honestly, it is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I am thrilled with the quality, appearance and ease of assembly of this baker's rack. I'm so happy with it that I plan to buy an InterMetro shelving unit as well.!!! Kudos to InterMetro for a quality product and The Container Store employees for their excellent advice and assistance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing utility for your kitchen!! I purchased the InterMetro Baker's Rack over three years ago. It has traveled with me from my first New York City apartment to my current apartment and it is the most perfect piece of furniture in my kitchen! I haven't purchased any new pieces since my initial buy, but I've been dying to add a wine rack shelf to my unit. The butcher block top is perfect for preparing meals and the hooks hold my spare mugs, oven mits, whatever I need. The design is nice and slim at 12" depth and doesn't take up much space in the slim kitchens you find so often in New York apartments. The adjustable feet for floor incline/decline is perfect considering a lot of Brooklyn's buildings seem to offer a slant. This Baker's Rack is a dream and I can't imagine my kitchen without it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Kitchen Add-On I live in a small apartment and don't have much counter space. I purchased this baker's rack as a solution and couldn't be happier. I have products in jars on the top rack, so I have more space on my actual counters. I also have the wine rack and one regular shelf underneath, which are great space-savers and look great! The chopping block itself is wonderful - I cut things right on it. It's easy to clean. I treat it with wood oil once every few months to keep it soft and to the stain I want.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bakers rack! A very good purchase! Unbelievably sturdy (husband sat on the top shelf- he's 6ft tall, 230lbs!!). Not shaky or rickety in the least. I have our toaster oven on the butcher block top, pans & lids fit nicely on the hang rack, other small appliances on the two bottom shelves and still room for canisters on top. I love all the counter & cabinet space this has freed up! I just ordered the locking casters , more hooks and seriously thinking about a hanging basket...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent storage system The Intermetro Baker's rack is amazing! It is quickly assembled (took about 30 minutes) with no tools required (although my Elfa rubber mallet did come in handy rather than using my hand) and incredibly sturdy. The shelves provide excellent for canisters of dry goods (flour, sugar, etc), and the butcher block top is thick and well-made. I especially liked how the Container Store folks packed it in several boxes so that I could easily get everything into my apartment. Love this system!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great pantry storage Bought an extra 8"D shelf for pantry items instead of hanging utensils as suggested by the package. You can fit many of the OXO Pop canisters on the shallow shelves, so it's great as a pantry. The butcher top is very good quality. I added 4 non-locking casters for mobility. The combination was expensive, but it's absolutely versatile and functional!

I don't think my husband loves that part sooo much). So with the help of and employee, he help me to design exactly what a needed; because we made a few changes. So I can tell you that I I'm very happy, now we are moving to our own house so I already found the perfect place to put it :) Thank You

Can I use a toaster oven on this?

Hi, I'm thinking about using this in my apartment which doesn't have a kitchen and I would like to have a toaster oven on this. But I need to know if it would be safe for me to to so. If I'm going to be using a toaster oven or a hot plate, will the paint on the shelves come off or emit any fumes? I'm also curious if the paint will possibly come off and get into my food.
Asked by: collegekid94
We've had a regular toaster on the butcher block for about 20 years now. I'm on here because the white baker's rack is looking a little yellowed after two decades of use, so we're moving it to basement storage, and I ordered the stainless steel pieces to make a new one. The butcher block (which I regularly oil with mineral oil) still looks like new so I'll be using it with the new stainless steel shelving. It has held my Kitchen-Aid Mixer, the toaster and a bread box for all this time. My husband has toast 1-2x/day and the wood underneath looks like new. I wouldn't put th e toaster on the coated shelves directly.

I live in a humid salty environment. How long do each of the color choices last in such an environment?

Asked by: Kahless
While I don't live in a humid salty environment, I can tell you that our white baker's rack, which has held a ton of stuff in our kitchen for the past twenty years, only recently started looking a bit yellowed (in the past year, or so) and we are now replacing it with stainless steel, but it is still super strong and we'll be using it for basement storage. My kitchen is light and airy but there are 5 doorways and two huge windows, hence not enough cabinet space and this was a life saver. One of those doors leads outside, another to a sometimes damp basement thanks to too many hurricanes and other storms, so while it's not like living at the beach (which I've done) I'd guess these hold up pretty well in such a situation, unless they get to the point that the coating starts to peel, and then you may have rust which I know is a consequence of living by the shore. I have just a few small spots where the coating has peeled very recently. After two decades of heavy use, the wear is minimal (and I don't have any rust, but I'm not by the shore). We've decided to replace the white with stainless steel to match the stainless steel appliances we've gotten over the past few years, but the butcher block is still in great shape (I wipe it down with mineral oil a few times a year) so I'm buying new shelving but using the original wood butcher block. Our rack is also directly in front of a small radiator that is flush to the wall and the bottom shelves have held up to the fluctuations in temperature. I can't compare the black or stainless as this is the only metro shelving I have but I hope this gives you some guidance, I'd take a chance, it's a handy rack and holds a lot in a small footprint.

Can I buy the top piece separately?

I already have the bottom half, but I want to add the second piece. Is it sold separately? Is there a way to attach it?
Asked by: Hannahwk94
If you mean the narrow shelf or the pot rack, yes they come separately, After 20 years we are replacing our white rack with the separate pieces to make up a new stainless steel baker's rack and I was able to buy all the metal pieces separately, and am re-using the butcher's block which is still in great shape, thanks to oiling it a few times a year with food grade mineral oil. I think they sell the butcher's block separately too. I just wish they made the 14" deep shelves in the longer 48" inch length,

Can it be used outdoors?

I just moved to Los Angeles and I cannot use the Bakers Rack in my kitchen where I previously used it and loved it. There is space for it in my back patio but do not know if the wood and steel would be resistant to the outsoors. Thanks!
Asked by: Gina42
I don't see why not. The shelf are sturdy and there are additional pieces for purchase that can be used to screw the top shelf down to an outdoor barn/garage wall etc.. I would recommend opting out of the butcher block then incase of rain damage etc.. and maybe white would be less optimal for outdoor use.

Can I add butcher block top to every shelf?

I am looking for shelves to hold my coffee and tea items. The shelf will be very visible so I was hoping for more than wire shelves.
Asked by: Emmywebe
No. The butcher block is specially made for the middle shelf/table top height. The other wire racks can be fitted with liners to help keep delicate items from sliding through.
