because of the holes of the shelves, I can't put books on these shelves. Please advise.

Are the shelves optional?
I'm trying to find a unit that doesn't have low shelves due to animals, and wanting to put trash/recycling underneath. Is it possible to omit the bottom few shelves during installation?
