unappealing laminate topi have an older version of both the birch and walnut elfa desktops, and did not realize that these newer ones have changed. The older versions have an attractive natural wood grain, these newer ones have a solid colored laminate top which looks cheap and quite unattractive. If only I could install these upside down, so that the wood grain is visible I would.
I would return if possible but ive already committed to a large elfa system.

Top is Black Not GreyLike another reviewer, unbeknownst to me, the top of this desktop panel is BLACK--not grey. The Designer at the Container Store never mentioned this (and likely doesn't even know, as they don't have this product on display). I have another whole elfa built-in desk setup in another room of my home in white and the top of that one is white. All the other colors appear to have the top the same color as the sides. All the other Decor shelves and accessories ordered in grey come in grey.
But for some unknown reason, not this one. Why? Who knows. The only way you seem to be able to know it is has a black top is by checking this website--which is ridiculous as the Container Store's big deal is that they have free designers who will set up your space--not need to search through part numbers on websites or read catalogs.
Very disappointing. Since I spent hours drilling holes in my wall and setting this $2000 desk up today I'm kind of stuck with it. But I can't understand a) why the top is black and b) why no one bothered to tell me--when you order a product called "grey" there is the reasonable expectation it will indeed BE grey. Especially when literally every single other item in the series called "grey" is actually grey all the way around.

The Grey Desk Top is not grey.I purchased this desk top to match my grey decor shelves. Unfortunately, the desk top is not grey, it is black. I can't understand why it is not the same color as the shelves, as it appears that the other color desk tops in the line match their shelves. Very disappointing.

Great desk for small spaceI’ve been searching for a small desk to fit an area above our cabin stairs for four years. I have Elfa shelves in my home office. So happy when I saw the birch decor desk came in 36” width. It was a breeze to install. The desk and shelves are very sturdy.

The front edge of this is too sharp!I recently completed a huge Elfa installation in my home office, which included this Elfa Decor "Desk Top" that is 3 feet wide and 20 inches deep. It's almost a great product, but it has one critical flaw that I can't get over. The most important edge is too sharp.
When using this surface for computer work, which I do over 8 hours each day, my wrists get roughed up and literally hurt from the sharp edge between the top surface and the front surface.
Surely, this is intended to have the shelf fit in attractively with the rest of the Decor line, and yes it LOOKS great. But there is a reason that almost every other "desk" surface has a bullnose rounding, or a chamfered / filleted edge where your arms will rest: because they know that's just more comfortable to rub up against.
I'll be working with my carpenter to round this edge and repaint the piece, but for a hundred-dollar piece of wood, I shouldn't have to do that. Comfort should come before looks, and the product designers at Elfa, if they are truly committed to selling work desks, should seriously consider offering this desk top in a new SKU with a rounded front edge. People would love it.

Check the color before purchasingFirst of all I am a huge Elfa fan and love the products and durability.
I bought this desktop for a garage project. When I went to install I noted that there is a nice wood grain pattern on one side of the desk and an "not so attractive" yellow on the other. I sat there trying to figure out why the bracket mounting was set up to have the "not so attractive" side on top and the nice wood grain hidden on the bottom. Reading the other reviews indicates that this is the intention. Bizarre if this is really the case.

NEW DESKTOP COLORS!There are new colors for the décor desktops! The walnut décor isn't an "ugly" brown top anymore for the desktop. It is a sleek black top and looks great. I wanted the melamine top on my décor shelves for the desk portion of my solution to protect where I was writing instead of just having the shelves for a desk that weren't protected. But I'm glad they came out with another color choice since the walnut desktop was so different from the shelves before and didn't look great. IT DOES NOW! Worth buying a new desk top.

High quality and worth the investmentI bought the birch desk top as part of a customized desk set up. It's simple and non-intrusive. I also had a hard time finding something that fit with the specific space I had to work with, without wasting additional space. Love that you can buy the measurements that work for you. Definitely worth the brand's extra cost over the long term. I also debated between this and the less expensive drift wood color and really happy I did. It's sturdier and the color goes with a number of color schemes I've used in my home office.

Walnut desktop is wrong colorOverall, the desktop is a good product. It is spacious, sturdy and easy to install/remove.
The top surface of the desk is a slightly different material than the rest of the decor pieces. It is a harder material that will handle writing and other desktop stuff without scratching. The problem with this surface is that the walnut color is off. Way off. It is a really ugly brown color that will not match your other walnut decor pieces. The picture on this website is not representative of the actual color. I exchanged mine for a white one.
Other than color, it's a great desk.

Elfa Rocks!My husband and I purchased our first Elfa system for my closet after a home renovation. We loved the product so much that we have gone on to purchase another closet system, desk/bookshelves for our family room, storage shelves for playroom, bookshelves/computer desk for office, and shelving in our mudroom. We love them all! The decor Elfa shelves look great, are sturdy and functional and meet all the needs of our growing family. I highly recommend everyone to give Elfa a try!

Will this accommodate a keyboard tray?
Can I mount a pull-out keyboard tray on the underside of the desk top? It attaches with six screws. I estimate it weighs a couple of pounds, as the sliding mechanism is metal.

Instead, we would recommend placing your keyboard on the surface of the Desk Top and elevating your monitor using our White elfa décor Accessory/Monitor Shelves.
