In the article below, Leslie Saeta of the My 100 Year Old Home blog shares how Elfa helped maximize her beach house's multi-use garage space.

At our small beach home in Ventura, CA, every room is used heavily--especially our garage. First of all, it's always been a very popular place for our grown boys as it hosts a bar, TV, ping pong table, and dartboard. It's also our laundry room, as well as our storage space for surfboards, wet suits, bikes and lots of household supplies. Needless to say, we have needed a garage makeover for a very long time! I knew it was a bigger job than what I could do myself, and fortunately The Container Store came to the rescue.

Before

My goal for the garage makeover was to create a permanent place for all of the storage and free up the rest of the space as a game room for our kids. When you look at the "before" photos, you can see that many items didn't have permanent storage space and the instant hot water heater was a real eyesore.

The bikes took up one-quarter of the floor space in the garage and made it impossible to access anything in the storage cabinets behind them. (Don't ask about the rug--I have no idea why I was saving it!)

The surfboards were a "safety hazard" (I know from personal experience!) and the wet suits in the cupboard needed air to dry.

I started the design process by meeting with an in-home designer from our local Oxnard, CA Container Store location. She met me at the house and helped determine how we could eliminate the closed cabinets and redesign the walls with Elfa shelving for storage. Then, once I ordered all of the products, the installer from The Container Store arrived and did everything! He took down the old cabinets, patched and painted the walls, and installed everything--all in one day!

And even though this was the Elfa designer's very first customer request for surfboard storage, her solution (separating them with Elfa Utility Bracket Posts) was brilliant! The surfboards each have their own slot and no longer block the window, and the wet suits can now dry in the open air.

Hanging the bikes from Elfa Utility Bike Hooks made all of the difference in the world; by alternating the hanging direction of the bikes, the designer figured out we could fit more bikes in this area. (Now the boys have room to chase after stray ping pong balls!)

I love how great the Elfa system looks. And while I knew everything that was originally in the closed cabinets behind the bikes would easily fit, It was still exciting to see it all organized and accessible. I ordered lots of great totes to store everything in all different sizes! These totes included:

We also added two Gladiator White Large GearBox Cabinets, which are great for storing tools, paint and some of my home décor items.

Once the Elfa Ventilated Shelves were installed, I started filling the plastic totes to determine where everything would go. They were placed on the shelves based on usage; for example, the most seldom-used items were placed on the top shelves. Next, I added labels to make sure EVERYONE in our family would know where to put things away, not just me! I even added an Anchor Hocking Glass Canister for washing machine soap.

Thanks to The Container Store, our garage at the beach was transformed into the most incredible space. They did a fantastic job with our garage makeover, and I am beyond excited! No matter how large or small your space, a little organization from The Container Store goes a long way!
