Perfect for vinyl records
This is a very attractive and useful unit that has been a huge help in storing my extra vinyl records that don't fit in my existing floor-to-ceiling shelves. It looks great -- it creates an illusion of floating white shelves with records suspended from the front, and from the side you see minimal metal hardware.
It is a little hard to put together, but once you widen the holes slightly with a flathead screwdriver, and wiggle the metal posts as you insert them, you are all set. The end result is attractive, useful, and very sturdy.
Lastly, I would be remiss not to mention the Container Store's excellent customer service. I also ordered this in the horizontal unit, for which two of the side wire panels arrived damaged, and they very quickly delivered me replacements at no charge. I'm sure that would apply to this version of the unit, as well.

Takes a little effort, but with great results
This does take some finagling to get together, but it is worth it!
Like another reviewer mentioned, it is very hard to get the silver posts in. I had to use a flat head screwdriver to enlarge the rubber holes slightly, then push down while wiggling slightly. It was a little physically challenging, but I got it done. Oh, and be sure to install with the thin wires facing inwards, or the posts will slant upwards at the top.
However, once it's done, it looks quite clean and contemporary, and has been a great space saver for me. I ended up getting two of these, and three of the horizontal 3-shelfers, and I love how they look both together, as well as spaced throughout the apartment. I'm sure I'll have them for many years to come, and they'll always go with at least some part of my decor.

Difficult to assemble
I must agree with the other reviewer that these shelves are ridiculously hard to put together. The problem is that each hole contains a white plastic cap that makes the holes too small for the metal posts. The instructions say that no tools are needed, but you will need a rubber mallet to force the metal posts into the holes. I don't mean a gentle tap; you will need to pound on the sides to make them fit. That's ok for the lowest shelf, but as I worked my way up to higher shelves, i was afraid that the lower structure would be compromised, but fortunately it all held together. I learned a trick toward the end, which is to use a large flat screwdriver to twist into the holes to widen the openings. The instruction sheet consisted of a small, vague diagram which was not helpful- There were no written steps for assembly. Also, the assembled shelf cannot be moved (probably because it will fall apart) so I had to stand in a closet for 45 minutes putting it together.

ridiculously difficult to set up
Assembling these shelves was a big exercise in frustration tolerance for me. I'm surprised the other reviewer had such an easy time setting this up. I needed myself and another 150 lb. person putting all our weight on each metal rod to push it into its corresponding hole. Also, once you have it set up, you can't move it to another location because the poles fall out of the holes. Now that it's assembled, I don't think I'll be able to take it apart again, which is what I'd been hoping to do for my next move. Terrible, overpriced product.
