12" Skandia Shelves
Durable and versatile
The Skandia shelving units are wonderful because of their versatiliby. I have moved 4 times since I bought the units and have been able to re-configure them seamlessly into each new dwelling. They are durable and are easy to break down/set-up. I use them as bookshelves. I highly recommend the strong, attractive and useful Skandia system (sold as component parts).

best purchase decision ever
I bought the skandia shelving system in 2001 when I lived in San Antonio (tall and short uprights, 12"x40" shelves). I'm in the Air Force so I have moved around a lot since then...into different houses, townhouses, and condos...all with different floor plans. Over the years I have set up my bookshelves in different configurations to fit my different living spaces and I have gradually purchased more shelves and uprights. The decision to buy this adjustable shelving system was the best furniture purchase decision I have ever made...I'm very pleased with the look and strength of my bookshelves.

love Skandia - have had for years BUT
I have enjoyed the flexibility and minimum beauty of Skandia for years. I've moved 3 times in the past 7 years and they remain sturdy and adaptable to my changing configuration needs. My most recent move required that I expand my system. I was disappointed that end caps are no longer made/available for purchase, 2) the time it took to receive my order and 3) 1/3 of my shelf order had bent rods! I was barely able to use them, and in the process, wood was gorged.

Excellent, flexible, no longer suitable for books
I've been using Skandia shelves for at least a decade and a half, and my bookshelves have traveled with me through several moves. I love them. An assembled shelf is sturdy and can hold a great deal of weight (though the wood is soft and gouges easily), but Skandia shelving's chief value derives from its flexibility. The usefulness of shelves that can be disassembled, transported, reassembled, and reconfigured is hard to overstate â¿¿ these are shelves that are potentially adaptable to a lifetime of varied uses and situations.
I've personally used my shelves to house a large and growing book collection, but, unfortunately, I can't recommend them to anybody who doesn't already own a set of Skandia shelves. This is because the Container Store no longer carries Skandia fill panels or Skandia wire bookends, so if you don't want books spilling out the sides, your only option is to use weighted bookends of the sort that you might use on a mantelpiece. This isn't a serious option for a large book collection.
Another concern is that Skandia components are rarely stocked in stores, so you'll need to order them online. For reasons that aren't clear to me, you can sometimes arrange a store pickup and you sometimes can't, so sometimes you'll need to pay a substantial shipping charge. And finally, the shelves are usually backordered, so you may wait weeks or even months before your order is fulfilled. I'm currently waiting on an order that I placed a few weeks ago, and it has already missed its original ship date.
