It does a good job of holding even wide paperbacks open. The back part is longer than the front, so you can slide it up part way to turn a page. You still need 2 hands for that, but it let's read one handed for the most part. So it's nice if you are exercising, drinking or eating because it frees up your other hand until you have to turn the page.

Best Bookmark Ever
I have used this bookmark for more than 5 years and still find it to be perfect for my style of reading without having to hold the book open or having to put in a bookmark when my reading is interrupted. Having recently lost one of my black ones, I ordered three chrome replacements. The chrome ones are much easier to find when they are dropped under the sofa or snitched by a cat looking for a new toy.

Not as expected, but still ok
I got this thinking it could make reading while laying on my side a bit easier, but after playing with it I realized that it's intended more for instances where the book is to stay on one page. It seems like it would be difficult to turn the page with this 'on' the book. Having said that, it does a good job of holding a book open and the book will actually stand upright as well (if thick enough I'm assuming). Good luck!

We purchased this for our 95 years "young" grandmother. She loves to read, but her hands become fatigued from holding a book open. This little gadget is correctly named...it is truly magic...our grandmother loves it! It easily holds her books open, and she can now read for as long as she wants without tiring!
