Stainless Steel 12 gal. Rectangle Step Can
liked it while it lasted
It surprises me how much trash cans cost. After a year of use, the step mechanism (which I prefer to the electronic mechanism because I'm after it will break) broke. I love that the Container Store stands behind their products--they replaced it with the same one. After a few months, the step mechanism again broke. The part that is inside is the part that broke, both times. The Container Store gave me credit towards a new trash can. I ended up spending even more! I liked everything else about this trash can, and if the mechanism hadn't broken, I would have been very happy with it. Uses regular trash bags and inner bucket that was very functional.

Lid broke off after seven months
Last week I opened up the lid using the foot pedal, I placed my garbage in the can, turned around and heard a thud. I looked back and the lid had completely split from the hinged mechanism. Well, actually, it didn't come apart from the metal hinge, The plastic lid broke off from itself. I think this is a design flaw-- that the lid is too heavy (especially flipping lengthwise, rather than, say a butterfly opening) for the mechanism, and over time, it just breaks off. I bought it in the store, and didn't look at any reviews. Now, I see others have had the same issue.

We wanted a good, nice looking trash can for our kitchen. We saw this one at the Container Store and thought it was rather pricey, but it looked like a sturdy can. We have had it now for 6 or 7 months and are very happy with it.... except the other day, the lid hinge broke. We are not hard with the can, so like a previous customer said, I believe this is a weak spot in the design. I will contact customer service and see if they stand behind this product.

We bought this only 5 months ago and it has broken. We don't use it all that often unless we're cooking, as we have other trash cans/recycle bins in the bathrooms etc. and there are just the two of us. This trash can seemed to be pretty sturdy except for the lid and the lid hinge area which is made of fairly flimsy and, apparently, brittle, plastic. The hinge just snapped one day when I was using it. I know we didn't spend hundreds of dollars on this trash can, but for $80 or so, a trash can should last longer than 5 months! I am extremely disappointed in this product. I read the review that someone else had written who had experienced the same problem and hoped that it wouldn't happen to me too, but it did. It seems like a design flaw in the product and they should at least provide store credit.
