White elfa freestanding Out-of-Season Closet
I did it!
I chose this system for a guest room closet for several reasons:
1) Consumer Reports rated Elfa the easiest to assemble closet system, and it was also the only system it didn't find any problems with in terms of quality.
2) I wanted a freestanding system. My dwelling has very brittle, paper-thin drywall and I didn't want to disturb it by having to install a wall stud attachment. I also liked the option of being able to move it around easily when necessary.
3) I wasn't ready to invest in one of Elfa's full-sized closet systems, and I felt this was an affordable alternative.
If I had had the option of having the Container Store install it for me I would have happily paid extra, but I live outside their service area and decided that I might as well figure it out myself as to have a handyman who was just as inexperienced with the system try to do it for me. It took me longer than the 35 minutes it took Consumer Reports to assemble their Elfa unit, but that was because (a) my spatial relations skills are not that great, and it took some trial and error to figure out the right way to fit one part to another, and (b) although the instructions recommended that two people do the assembly, I did it all myself. It took patience and persistence and there was a fair amount of metal objects clanging to the floor before I got them to properly fit together. But I did it.
The system is well-balanced and stable. Those tricky to fit together components are strong once they're securely in place. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of plastic-coated metal components but it's quite a handsome looking unit once it's assembled. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Elfa freestanding unit.

Good item - a little challenging to assemble
This free-standing closet is clearly what was advertised and will work perfectly for what I bought it to do. The only challenge was the assembly and the instructions were not as clear and simple as stated in the instructions. It was a little challenging to assemble but once assembled is fantastic.
