There's nothing like the real thing - our Authentic Dairy Crate is the same strong crate used at dairies. In fact, it was one of the first products sold at The Container Store, after we persuaded the original manufacturer of the milk crates that if consumers could buy them, they wouldn't have to resort to stealing them from grocery stores. Slightly larger than our Authentic Dairy Crate, our durable Supreme Crate is the perfect size to accommodate record album collections.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Can't go wrong w/milk crates because milk crates Look at this milk crate. Look at more milk crates. The use of these are limitless. They can be stacked, they can stand alone. They can hold things. They can transport things. They can also make an object look taller by putting that object on top. January 6, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Super handy! Love these crates. I have a lot of them and keep coming back for more. They are sturdy and can be configured into almost anything - bookshelves, bathroom or kitchen storage, hobby/sports/toy holders. Can even be used to support a tabletop, desk or shelves in a pinch. They keep things organized and neat. I move frequently for work and love how you just pick these up and go. Use cable ties to bind two or more together for greater stability. The black ones are low profile and look a little less "college dorm" which I like. These are commercial grade and not the flimsy imitations you find at discount stores. November 1, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect as a trunk organizer I use this crate to keep all of my reusable shopping bags in, as well as my daughter's toys in. It makes the perfect trunk organizer. I can keep everything in one place instead of spread all over the trunk. September 20, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great for Organizing Your Trunk and Other Things I used these crates for many things when I taught: bookshelves, organizing folders by the writing groups with whom I met based on Days of the Week - Red for Monday, Orange for Tuesday, Yellow for Wednesday, Green for Thursday, Blue for Friday), or by subject matter - Blue for Math, Green for Science, Yellow for Writing. Now, I'm using them to organize my trunk. I have shopping bags in one crate, weather-related items (boots, gloves & hat, ice scraper, windshield-cover for winter) in another, and car-specific items in another. Plus, they keep a larger tub in which I haul my Norwex Anti Bac Microfiber, Products, firmly in place the far reaches of my trunk. August 25, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product Very sturdy and love the colors. Great for storing and organizing as well as transporting. August 24, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Love "milk" crates and especially the color choice I had a few of these "milk" crates, as I call them for storage purposes. When I returned to the classroom recently to teach, I looked for some locally but had no success. I am so glad to have found these crates! I especially loved the fact I could get one in yellow and one in blue, my school's colors. They are sturdy and can be used for many different purposes. July 16, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent quality This crate is very sturdy and better quality than any of the old fashioned milk crates I've seen. I'm sure it will last for years. July 15, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Efficient The crates are sturdy and were available at the store when expected. I was notified promptly for pickup. July 5, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product I used these for my classroom library. I bought the white crates and my husband attached them to white 2x8 boards. The crates store featured books and stuffed animals. The shelves store over 20 baskets of books. The crates are very sturdy. I could not be more happy with this product! :) April 27, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Real Deal! I've had an old dairy crate that's been used for numerous tasks since it was handed down to me in the late 1980s. Fast forward to 2013 and the crate is finally beginning to crack and split in places. When I heard about The Container Store's crates, I was skeptical... but in need of a crate so figured I'd give it a shot. SO GLAD I DID! As they say, these are the real deal; next time they go on sale I plan to stock up! April 27, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by happy with my purchase i got two crates for my kid's toys. they are very sturdy and stack well too. i was pleasantly surprised that these crates can hold a lot of small toys like train parts, and duplo legos. they fit perfect under our train table. my kids can lift and carry with ease. April 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Life saver: and under $10!!!! I first bought these for my son's playroom to organize toys/books/balls/action figures. Unlike other toy chests and the adorable animal toy sacks also sold at the container store (we also have these for big items like stuffed animals), you can actually see the contents! So if searching for a particular toy, you can visually select it and do not have to dump multiple toy chests or sacks to search for coveted item. They are bright and stack together vertically in a column and look very modern. In our small home they save so much space-I also look for storage options that utilize upward space. I loved them so much that I have bought them for myself (the bright colors are so cheery and add a splash of happiness to our grey, walls and furniture). I store folded sweaters and other folded clothes in mine. We also have a few in the living room to organize cable boxes and dvds. Who ever thought a milk crate could be so hip! You cannot beat under $10 for a life solution to clutter and time saving organization. April 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by I'D BE LOST WITHOUT MY MILK CRATES! www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAcjbMyfkIQ I love crates. April 19, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Book Saver We needed something to hold all of my daughter's books. I knew The Container Store would have something that would be able to do the trick. We don't have an actual store in Michigan, but I love all of their products. The crates are nice and colorful and allow easy access for our budding reader to find what all of her books! April 3, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Satisfied These crates are sturdy and look good. I bought the red one, and it is a very nice shade of red. Would buy again. April 2, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by best storage ever I LOVE these crates. They look funky, the stack well, they can be used for anything and they can be used out of sight or as part of your deco. If you are a bit of an organizational freak like me, use different colors to color code what is in which crate. I ordered 8 of them, and could have ordered more! February 28, 2013

They are constructed of plastic, so they would last as long as any other plastic item when left outside. I don't think it would be a problem.

Yes. Almost anything will deteriorate overtime when exposed to UV light but these very sturdy crates would provide reliable storage for outside toys for at least several seasons.

Answer:
The crates are designed to be stacked open-side-up. A rim at the bottom of the crate which serves as "feet" fits securely inside the "lip" of the open side when they are stacked. This allows several crates to be stacked neatly and consistently. If stacking with the opening to the side (bookshelf style), there is no built-in mechanism for interconnecting the crates; however, it is possible to stack them in this manner. Obviously, children, pets and others lacking mature judgement should be supervised in the presence of stacked crates. Toppling a stack could be dangerous.

Answer:
The Authentic Dairy Crates can be stacked in an upright position, but it does not click into place. If you are looking for crates that can lock into place, you may want to look into our Supreme Crates, which are listed in our Product Recommendations. They can also be stacked into an upright position, and they are a bit more stable.

Answer:
Maybe, maybe not. Obviously, the hanging bars typically used for hanging files are not present in the dairy crate. So the mechanism that usually keeps those hanging files "on track" is not present. I tried inserting a letter size hanging file into the crate and it fit very nicely. The "arms" of the hanging file sit right on the rim of the milk crate. If your crate is full of hanging files, this might work well. Keep in mind, though, that if you have only a few hanging files, they are likely to twist, move and fall off the rim creating ... sub-optimal filing conditions. Perhaps you could devise a way to install the tracks hanging files require. This would provide a happy solution for many prospective users!

Answer:
Authentic crates were designed to hold at least 4 gallons of milk. According to the USDA, a gallon of milk weighs 8.6 pounds (USA). When in good condition, these crates should hold and support a minimum of 40 pounds in the open-side-up position. In my experience, they support slightly less weight when turned so that the opening faces the side - when used bookshelf style, for example. Stacking extremely heavy items on the crates in this position may cause the edges to bow slightly over time. In real-world applications, I have found that these crates can be fully loaded with the heaviest books in one's library and are always equal to the task! In household storage applications, I have never observed an outright product failure.

We do not carry exact hardware to do this. However, you can go to your local hardware store and get a thicker nail or screw, if you screw it in about 1/2" to 3/4" of the way you can use them as hooks to hang the dairy crate.

Container Stories
Inspired Spaces

When Angela and David set out to transform an upstairs bedroom/playroom space for their two precious boys Max (4) and Daniel (7), they admittedly had a 700 square foot disaster zone on their hands. They enlisted the help of friend and stylist, Gena Sigala, to help give the large area some personality and order, which was lacking prior. The result is a sunny room full of spunk just like the sweet boys.
